Lane Cove News Week in Review 8th to 14th November 2020

This week was very different from the same week last year.  Last year a moving Remembrance Day service was held in the Lane Cove Plaza and in the days before Remembrance Day students from Hunters Hill High School were selling Remembrance Day poppies and other pins for the RSL.

This year due to COVID19 restrictions, only a small wreath-laying ceremony was conducted at the Lane Cove Cenotaph (located near the Lane Cove Library).  Wreaths were laid by school children from many of the schools in the Lane Cove Council Area and Hunters Hills High.

St Michael’s Primary School looked amazing.  The kids had decorated their front fence with paper poppies.

Lane Cove’s Senior Ranger Released on Bail

Vladimir Kotlyar, Lane Cove’s Senior Ranger, 56, was arrested in Wollstonecraft on Wednesday 21st October 2020 after Australian Border Force (ABF) officers allegedly discovered firearm parts in parcels. He has been in jail since this time.
On 11 November 2020, Mr Kotlyar was released on bail. NSW Local Courts Media spokesperson advised ITC several bail conditions were applied.  Read More here.

IPC Gives the Green Light to Greenwich Hospital Redevelopment

The Independent Planning Commission (the Commission) has granted consent to plans for a multimillion-dollar redevelopment of Greenwich Hospital.

HammondCare sought concept approval for a new 150-bed hospital building, respite care facility, two seniors living buildings and 329 car parking spaces on the 3.4-hectare River Road site.

Under the $141.5-million proposal, all existing buildings would be demolished – except for the heritage-listed Pallister House.

There will need to be excellent traffic management plans in place during construction as River Road traffic heading towards North Sydney was down to one lane near the Greenwich School during the construction of new buildings at the school.  Read More Here.

Watch Out Thieves About in The Canopy

This following was posted on Lane Cove Chat by ITC

“My daughter left her school bag at the canopy and had her laptop stolen yesterday. Her fault for leaving it there but a reminder to our kids that there are always opportunists so don’t leave their school bags unattended. If anyone saw someone rummaging through school bags next to the sandpit around 4-5 pm yesterday, please let me know.”

Since this message was posted, ITC has been made aware of a few other incidents of purses being stolen from prams or from bags in The Canopy.

There is CCTV at The Canopy, and the security team is looking at the tapes.

Lane Cove Locals In the News

Graeme Davis

Congratulations to those members of the NSW SES – Hunters Hill Unit who this week received a “NSW Premier’s Bushfire Emergency Citation”.

The citation was in recognition of their contribution and service to the NSW Bushfires 2019-2020.

Among those who received the citation was Lane Cove’s Graeme Davis. Graeme is a busy man and is he also President of the Lane Cove RSL NSW Sub Branch. He works very hard to put together the moving ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day Services in Lane Cove with the Lane Cove Council. In particular, he researches members of the armed services who have a Lane Cove Connection and it is fascinating history. Other members to receive a citation were Mark Alberton and Russ Evans and Gary Ackhurst and Tony Downs both from Gladesville.

Aura Parker

Congratulations to local author Aura Parker whose book Meerkat Splash has been announced as the Speech Pathology Book of the Year best book for language and literacy development (0 – 3 years). Aura told us that the award ceremony was a video, instead of in-person and she was excited to prepare a little speech from home. She is thrilled and humbled to find out her little story about a bunch of colourful meerkats at bathtime has captured the imagination of very young readers. Read more about Aura here – she has released four great books and they are available at The Burns Bay Bookery

Local Charity Strong Mothers Thanks ITC Followers

We received the following update and thank you from Strong Mothers.

“Several weeks ago, local charity Strong Mothers posted a request for donations for the community of Mungindi. Their local stores had burnt to the ground and they had minimal access to food, baby items and cleaning products.

We at Strong Mothers were overwhelmed by the response – we were inundated with drop offs of groceries, toys and cleaning products in addition to raising $1,800 from a gofundme campaign. We are so proud to be part of such a generous and caring community.

All items were delivered and gratefully received by the people of Mungindi, and we would like to say a big thank you to everyone who assisted us. We are very grateful and appreciative.”

Thank you Lane Cove you never let ITC down when we ask for donations.

Thankfully expert physiotherapists, occupational therapists and exercise physiologists can teach some simple strategies to help reduce the strain your joints and improve the ongoing pain it can cause.   Read more here.

If you are suffering from osteoarthritis pain or ongoing joint pain, it may be helpful to consider booking an appointment with a physio to investigate the best joint protection methods for your circumstances.
