Welcome to our week in review.
Lane Cove Council April Meeting
The Lane Cove Council April Meeting was held on 18th April and finished at 11.43 pm. One reason for moving the public forum to a Monday night was to shorten the meetings. The meeting went from 7.00 pm to 11.43 pm.
One of the main issues debated was the release of the Budget Papers. Councillor Merri Southwood wanted to defer releasing the budget papers for comment as she was concerned that there was not enough time to review them and ask questions. She said this was the first time the Budget Papers had been released since the $75 million Lane Cove Sports and Recreation Facility had commenced construction. Five Councillors voted for the budget papers to go out for community consultation, and three councillors voted for the deferral of the budget papers.
Mayor Scott Benison said that the Budget was only an estimate and that preparing the budget paper was not rocket science but basic accounting.
The General Manager stated there were no factors that would impact the Council’s long-term financial plan. Is this statement consistent with the Lane Cove Council snapshot, which noted that additional costs in the Lane Cove Sports and Recreational Facility have arisen about sewer works and a Remediation Action Plan?
In a closed session, Councillors discussed limiting the number of questions that councillors could ask Lane Cove Council staff to five a week. The resolution was under the heading –
Psychosocial Hazards. All councillors supported this motion.
During the discussion on the Budget Papers, both Councillors Kennedy and Southwood mentioned that staff resourcing should be looked into to ensure that Lane Cove Council was suitably staffed to reduce stress on employees. Councillor Kennedy moved the following motion:
“that the Council review the Workforce Management Plan during the exhibition period to include Psychosocial Hazards. The plan could be enhanced by benchmarking other councils.”

Lane Cove Rotary Pride of Work Awards
Do you know a local who should receive recognition for their work?
Lane Cove Rotary will present its Pride of Work Awards at The Diddy on 21 May 2024.
Each year, Lane Cove Rotary likes to recognise people in our community who do things that make a difference in people’s. lives. Their efforts go largely unrewarded or might be underappreciated. We like to recognise them because we believe every job makes a difference, and even what may be viewed as menial tasks by some are integral to a well-functioning community. And when the person performing goes above and beyond or does that job with genuine care and pride, it makes even more difference.
Lane Cove Rotary would love some nominations from the community to make this Award night very special. If you know someone who should be nominated, please contact Kerry Moroney ([email protected]).
