Lane Cove News Week in Review 22nd to 29 May 2024

Welcome to our week in review.

Longueville Road Resurfacing and Speed Bumps

Lane Cove Council has been resurfacing Longueville Road in the Lane Cove Village and has now included two speed bumps—one near Central Avenue (see photo below) and one near Shorties Lane Cove.

On 28th May 2024, a roving reporter noted on Lane Cove Chat by ITC that after Longueville Road had been resurfaced, the left lane near Subway was now left-turn-only. Locals were unhappy with how this would impact Longueville Road traffic, and no one could remember it being approved by the Lane Cove Traffic Advisory Committee—the next day (29th May 2024 the arrows were gone (see our cover photo).

Lane Cove Commonwealth Bank Will Not Have Tellers

The Lane Cove Commonwealth Bank will move from Longueville Road to Lane Cove Market Square in July 2024. A notice posted at the branch has advised customers that there will be no tellers at the branch.

The new branch’s hoarding has been removed, and signage has been installed. The ANZ Bank old building in Lane Cove Plaza is now available to lease.

More On-Street EV Chargers for Lane Cove

This week, the NSW government announced funding for kerbside EV Chargers, and Lane Cove Council has been earmarked as one of the councils to receive the financing of further kerbside charges like the ones installed last year (see below).

Water Outage in Rosenthal Avenue, Burns Bay Road and Birdwood Avenue

On Tuesday, 28th May 2024, residents and businesses around Rosenthal Avenue, Burns Bay Road, and Birdwood Avenue were without water for several hours after workers working for Telstra broke a water main.  Sydney Water issued the following statement:

“Sydney Water has been called to a main break on Birdwood Avenue, Lane Cove, caused by third-party damage.

Network technicians are onsite working to isolate the main. Once isolated and repairs are underway, up to 121 properties will be impacted with no or low water pressure.

A Customer Advocate is liaising with customers. Sydney Water apologises for the inconvenience to our customers.”

Water was out from around 10.00 am to 2.00 pm.

Lane Cove in the News

The Sunday Telegraph published a story about undercover police dressed in hoodies patrolling the streets around Drummoyne and other western Sydney Suburbs. The police had been successful in arresting several groups that were stealing cars or committing other crimes.

Burwood Police Area Commander is quoted as saying that the arrested kids come from areas such as Lane Cove, Hunters Hill and Artarmon.  She told the Sunday Telegraph:

“Burwood Police Area Commander Christine McDonald said “the amazing proactive efforts” from the three plainclothes officers and their colleagues in general duties on Friday night was proof the initiative was working.

“It’s actually terrifying to think these young people are roaming the streets in the middle of the night when they should be in bed, armed with balaclavas and house-breaking implements,” she said. “We have intercepted over 20 kids at least so far which would have resulted in home invasions, and cars stolen. Our aim is to catch them before they commit the crime then everyone is safe, the young people included.”

The kids are coming into the area from Lane Cove, Artarmon, Hunters Hill, Miller, Heckenberg, and as far away as Jamberoo on the south coast.”

Night Works Continuing – Drilling Associated with Cabling for Data Centres

If you live around Burns Bay Road (including Penrose Street and Waterview Apartments), you may be hearing some loud nightworks. All over Lane Cove, different companies are installing cabling for data centres, which involves drilling. Notifications are not being provided to the general public, only to residents who may have their driveway access impacted.

We first mentioned this when the drilling started on River Road West Lane Cove – read more here

Greenwich Point Wharf Night Works

Greenwich Point Wharf is being upgraded as part of the Safe Accessible Transport program

Transport for NSW has issued the following advice about night work in Greenwich:

“Upcoming night work

As notified in April, Greenwich Point Wharf upgrade is underway, and some work is required outside standard hours.

For the safety of the community and workers, we need to carry out night work to install the precast lift pit near the wharf. The lift pit is being prebuilt and needs to be delivered to site when the water is calmer and there is less marine traffic.

When we’ll be working

Night work will take place over two weeknight shifts between Monday 3 June and Wednesday 12 June 2024 from 8pm and 5am, weather and maritime conditions permitting.

What will this mean for you?

Work will involve the delivery and installation of the lift pit. This will include deliveries via both water and road.

Equipment used will include a barge crane, trucks, hand tools and temporary lighting.

Trucks will be positioned at street level in Lower Serpentine Road and Mitchell Street to drop off and pick up equipment securely. Traffic control will be in place.

Pedestrian and vehicle access will be maintained via Lower Serpentine Road and the 265-bus route will continue to operate with no disruption to the services.

Managing our impacts

Some of our work may be noisy at times. We will minimise impacts to the community, by turning off equipment when not in use, and placing equipment and lights as far away as possible from residents.

Thank you for your cooperation while we carry out this important work.”

ABC Nightline – LINA Collective Supporter Drive

On ABC Nightline on Friday, 24 May 2024, Jacky Barker, the founder of In the Cove, was interviewed about the need to support your local hyperlocal news platform and how the Local and Independent News Association (LINA) is filling a gap by representing hyperlocals like In the Cove.

In the week beginning 3 June to 7 June 2024, LINA will be holding a collective supporter drive. They will match dollar for dollar any financial support provided to their members (up to a collective member total of $ 100,000), so if you have ever thought about helping out ITC, that is the week to do it. You can listen to the interview here at 26.57.

WhatsApp Dedicated ITC Channel

In the Cove publishes articles nearly every day about Lane Cove issues, events, businesses and things to do. Facebook and Instagram have changed their algorithms, and you will see less and less local news in your feeds.

To respond to this, we have developed a WhatsApp Channel – we will post all our articles and even some exclusive content to thank you for following us on WhatsApp – the good news is that it will be easier for you to share our articles with your family’s WhatsApp channel or street/apartment WhatsApp channel. We will soon be holding an exclusive comp for all our WhatsApp subscribers. So follow us here.

Another way to keep up to date with ITC is to sign up for our weekly news blast here.
