A man has been arrested for a scam which led to the attempted robbery of $8000 from an elderly Lane Cove resident and the assault of a relative in Lane Cove on Friday 19th July 2024.
North Shore Police investigated the assault from last Friday, which followed an ‘unauthorised financial transaction’ targeting an 81-year-old.
Officers were led to an address at Dunmore Street, Pendle Hill, on Thursday, July 25th, at around 8:30 a.m., and arrested a 29-year-old man. The man was then taken to Granville Police Station.
He was charged with common assault and stalk/intimidate intend physical harm and granted conditional bail to appear at Parramatta Local Court on 21 August 2024.
The victim’s family, who wish to stay anonymous, posted to Lane Cove Chat by ITC on Facebook cautioning any locals away from a similar experience.
“Please please please warn your elderly family of the risks of these types of scams. We are shaken up tonight knowing how much danger she was potentially in,” the post read.
The event unfolded last week when a man approached the elderly victim’s residence in an attempt to collect the money he earlier convinced the 81-year-old to withdraw after posing as their bank.
A male relative arrived home at the same time and became involved in a fight with the man, who then fled the scene shortly after.
Fortunately, police said there were no reports of any serious injuries.
At this stage, it’s unknown what platform the scam was carried out on or how the man made initial contact with the victim.
To assist with their investigation, police visited nearby streets to see if they could acquire any information or CCTV which would lead to a suspect’s arrest.
If you have any elderly family members or know any vulnerable individuals, it is important to warn them of these scams. ITC has been told this is not the first time this type of scam has been attempted in the Lane Cove Area.
