Welcome to our week in review.
Attempted Break-Ins Lane Cove West and Gladesville
On Saturday, 3 August 2024, a roving reporter sent ITC footage from their CCTV cameras of an attempted break-in at Lane Cove West around 3.30 a.m. Their neighbours were also targeted. In January 2023, there was also another attempted break-in at the same address. The homeowner now has installed alarms and CCTV, and they make sure all their windows and doors are locked.
After ITC posted the video and a warning on our social media channels, we were sent a message with a photo showing the same perpetrators attempting a break-in at a Gladesville home the same evening.
This is a timely reminder for all residents to ensure their homes, garages and cars are secured, even when they are home.
See below the same perpetrators in Gladseville.
NSW Finance Minister Doubles Down on Ticketless Parking Infringement Notices
Earlier this year, we reported that the Minister for Finance had asked local councils to issue printed parking infringement notices as the the ticketless parking infringement system meant drivers could not take photographic evidence at the time the tickets were issued. It is sometimes weeks before the fine notice arrives in the mail. Read our story here.
Minister for Finance Courtney Houssos today said:
“I’m grateful to the councils that have recognised the significant issues with the ticketless parking system introduced by the previous Liberal-National Government.
“I have spoken to mayors and councils from across the state and many agree there is a fundamental issue with a failure to notify drivers at the time of the fine.
“The community feedback has been overwhelming in favour of councils providing drivers with on-the-spot notifications of parking fines.
“Councils should come to the table and deliver a solution which embraces transparency and fairness.
“If councils aren’t willing to provide a common-sense fix, the NSW Government will step in and use our policy levers to ensure the ticketless parking fine system meets community expectations.”
In May this year we asked Lane Cove Council to advise if they would issue tickets as a matter or course.
A spokesperson for Lane Cove Council told ITC that printed infringement tickets will not be issued every time a ranger generates an infringement notice. A spokesperson said:
“There are instances such as this where it can be safer to issue fines electronically. Council also has a number of ticketless car parks where details are captured electronically and not monitored in-person.
We have also noticed a reduction in negative behaviour towards regulatory staff, providing a safer working environment for our staff.
Our procedure will therefore continue to be to use a mix of both formats; we do not intend to return solely to paper tickets. As part of their training, Rangers are taught the importance of showing discretion where appropriate and that includes both the issue of informal and formal warnings, as well issuing actual fines for non-compliance with the law. They will continue to utilise this training to identify the most appropriate procedure.”
Given today’s press release by the Minister for Finance we have asked Lane Cove Council to advise if the above still appllies.
Lane Cove’s Own Kookaburra Taken into Custody in Paris
Lane Cove’s Tom Craig is a member of the Australian Men’s Olympic Hockey Team (aka the Kookaburras). Last week, he played during the pool games and was on fire.
7News has reported that the Hockey player was taken into custody after attempting to buy cocaine on Tuesday night. He was later released with a warning.
Tom made a public apology stating, “for what has occurred over the past 24 hours”.
“I’ve made a terrible mistake and I take full responsibility for my actions. My actions are my own and by no way reflect the values of my family, my teammates, my friends, my sport, and the Australian Olympic team,” he told reporters.
“I’ve embarrassed you all. I’m truly sorry.”
Greenwich Point Wharf Upgrade – Night work
Transport NSW has advised that further work will be undertaken on the Greenwich Point Wharf as it is upgraded as part of the Safe Accessible Transport program.

The pontoon and piles are expected to be installed over six weeknight shifts between Sunday, August 4, 2024, and Thursday, August 22, 2024, from 10 pm to 5 am, weather and maritime conditions permitting.

Winter Sock Drive!
St Ignatius College Riverview’s Claver House is holding a winter sock drive. Socks are among the most valuable pieces of clothing for people without permanent housing.
For one, feet work overtime when there’s no cosy home (and laundry room) to return to each night.
Another reason is that new socks aren’t often donated. If you put yourself in someone else’s shoes (no pun intended), you can see how clean, warm socks are a true treasure. To make a difference this season, consider donating a pair of new, unopened socks to homeless and otherwise less fortunate families.
Please drop your donations of new socks at NiBu Cafe or York’s Corner Cafe in Riverview. Nibu Cafe is located in The Village Shopping Centre opposite Harris Farm Markets.
NSW Police are Investigating Suspicious Parcels
NSW Police are investigating after reports of packages being received in mailboxes falsely claiming to have been sent by NSW Health.
The public is advised that if they receive an item of this nature, they should avoid handling the package and contact the police immediately.
Members of the public coming into contact with these items should wash their hands thoroughly.
Anyone with information about this matter is urged to contact their local police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Are You Parking Illegally Outside Your Home?
This week, ITC came across an Inside Local Government article, which prompted us to remind locals to be sure their cars are legally parked outside their (or anyone’s) homes.
Bankstown Council recently launched a campaign to educate residents about the safety implications of failing to comply with this law. They cited pedestrian hazards and reduced visibility for road users as significant factors in launching the campaign.
Parking across a footpath, driveway or grassed area is illegal and could attract fines exceeding $319.
Refresh your knowledge of Parking Rules here.

Lane Cove Council Seeking Feedback on Bus Service Disruption
ITC readers would be aware from our previous reports that Busways took over Lane Cove (region 7) bus operations in 2022, following the NSW State Government’s decision to franchise bus services for Sydney, Northern Beaches, Eastern Suburbs, and the Lower North Shore/CBD in 2019.
Numerous ITC readers have expressed concern about the change to the number of buses servicing the area and their reliability. More recently, in July 2024, Transport for NSW announced changes to bus routes due to the Metro line extension. Read our article here.
Lane Cove Council is now asking community members to lodge feedback about cancelled and/or significantly delayed bus services in Lane Cove.

Free Event – In Conversation with Sally Jane Smith – Packing for Greece
Author Sally Jane Smith has lived on five continents and visited thirty-three countries, but she credits Greece for turning her into a writer.
In 2006, the bus on which she was travelling through Sri Lanka suffered a head-on collision, breaking both her body and her spirit.
A decade later, she journeyed to Greece in a quest to recover her wanderlust—and proved it is possible for an out-of-shape, middle-aged woman on a budget, equipped only with a guidebook and her mother’s 1978 travel diary, to experience a life-changing adventure.
This is the story that became the ‘Packing for Greece’ series. This is a free event.
When: Wednesday, August 14, 2 pm

Lane Cove Tigers’ Juniors Shine for Women in League Round
This past weekend, not one but two of Lane Cove Tigers Junior Rugby’s female teams were crowned minor premiers.
The U14s and U16s LeagueTag teams secured convincing wins at their home ground, Tantallon Oval. In addition, 3 of the U14s players (Taya, Boo & Ava) were invited by the Berowra Wallabies to play tackle at North Sydney Oval.
Congratulations to all involved; it’s a fitting way to celebrate the Women in League Round.
