Update: Woodford Bay Tree Vandalism Case

Following the illegal destruction of over 290 trees at Woodford Bay in November 2023, Lane Cove Council is pursuing criminal prosecution.

It has begun installing a 7-meter banner to block the view of the property, which would benefit the most from the mass clearing of trees.

Below is an artist’s impression of what the 7 meter banner will look like.

They will also monitor the health of affected trees and facilitate site regeneration.

Local councils are getting tougher on illegal tree destruction.

A developer who destroyed an 80-year-old oak tree has received more than he bargained for when he appealed a fine issued by the City of Canterbury Bankstown in court.

After a Canterbury Bankstown Council officer visited the developer’s Revesby construction site last year, the developer was issued a $3,000 fine for non-compliance with tree protection measures.

Unhappy with the fine, the developer appealed and the matter was dealt with at the Bankstown Local Court earlier this month. The Court was not impressed and slapped the developer, who failed to show, with a hefty $45,000 fine.  Read more here.

Scan&Go Trolleys Coming to Lane Cove Woolworths

From today, Wednesday 28 August 2024, Woolworths Lane Cove has Scan&Go Trolleys available.

Woolworths has been trialling Australia’s first digital supermarket trolley at Windsor. The trolley allows customers to scan and bag items and track their spending as they shop.

To use the trolleys, you need an Everyday Rewards card to unlock a tablet-style device. Attach it to your trolley, and off you go.

Faye Ilhan, from Woolworths Group, said the Scan&Go Trolley is a market-leading innovation that will help customers save time and balance their budgets when shopping at the supermarket.

“Pending feedback from our customers, we hope to introduce Scan&Go Trolley in more of our supermarkets nationwide, along with some additional features in the coming months, including the ability to pay for their groceries on the device.”

Staff at Woolworths Lane Cove said they were excited about the new technology’s introduction. The trolleys are available near the store’s entrance, and staff will be ready to assist customers with any questions.

Meet a Lane Cove Champion – Dan Johnston

Dan Johnston is a 24-year-old Riverview resident who will represent Australia in the 2024 Coastal Sprint Rowing World Championships in Italy next week. He will compete in the single-scull event.

At the Gold Coast last week, Dan became national champion in the single scull event.

Daniel attended primary school at St Michaels Primary School and high school at St Ignatius College Riverview, where his love of rowing commenced.

Coastal Sprint Rowing is a relatively new international sport.   In October 2023 World Rowing made the following announcement:

“The International Olympic Committee announced that Beach Sprint Rowing, a format of the Coastal Rowing discipline, will be included in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games programme, alongside Classic Rowing. For the first time, Rowing will be featured in two different disciplines, both set to be showcased at the heart of the Olympic Games.

The inclusion of Beach Sprint Rowing in the 2028 Olympic Games programme is the outcome of a decade-long development of Coastal Rowing with the active support of our 159 members and rowing communities across the world. World Rowing has embarked on an ambitious, global growth strategy for the discipline, underpinned by increased investments across geographies and participation in high-profile multisport events.”

Well done, Dan – we will catch up with Dan when he returns from Italy.

If you would like to know more about Coastal Sprint Rowing – details are here.

Community Helps With Public Art Project

Last Saturday morning at The Canopy, a group of enthusiastic young artists, guided by local artist Ros Gervay, created part of a new community artwork by painting black-and-white pebbles in a range of designs.

The newly painted pebbles will be used as playing pieces for checkers and backgammon on two community game tables located in the Lane Cove Plaza.

Ros has been transforming the picnic tables in the covered seating area near Gelatissimo (see our cover photo and below).

You might see her putting the finishing touches on them this week!
