NSW Health Advice: Hazard Reduction Burns

Hazard reduction burns are now taking place across NSW as bushfire season approaches, including in and around the Sydney metropolitan area.

Smoke from hazard reduction burning and bushfires can affect your health. It can also make some people’s existing health conditions worse.

You may be more sensitive to the health effects of smoke if you:

    • have a pre-existing heart or lung condition like asthma, emphysema and angina
    • are pregnant
    • are aged over 65
    • are an infant or a young child
    • have diabetes.

Check the air quality where you live and learn how to protect yourself:

Download the Hazards Near Me app and the RFS website for more information on hazard reduction burns near you.

Taylor and The Besties Show at The Canopy

On Friday, 6th September 2024, Taylor and The Besties show returned to the Canopy after their hugely successful Canopy debut in February 2024.  It was another sold-out concert, with locals who did not have tickets desperately asking if anyone had spare tickets.

The event kicked off with local group Phonic Duo (now a trio) as the support act, getting the fans fired up for a night of shaking it off to some great pop songs.

The main act took to the stage, and fans sang and cheered (seemingly without drawing breath) throughout the show.

The Lane Cove Fun Run was another huge success.

Public Consultation now open – NSW Plastics: The Way Forward

The EPA is seeking feedback from the community, industry, business and all interested stakeholders on proposed actions and timeframes to address unnecessary and problematic plastics.

The NSW Plastics: The Way Forward action plan proposes new initiatives including:

    • phasing out items like plastic lollipop sticks, pizza savers and food tags for bread, bakery and pantry items
    • bringing NSW into line with other states and phasing out the release of lighter-than-air balloons as well as the supply of plastic balloon sticks, clips and ties
    • introducing design standards for single-use plastic cups, food containers and their lids to ensure they are easily recyclable
    • phasing out the supply of unnecessary plastic barrier bags.

NSW Plastics: The Way Forward is now available on the NSW EPA’s Have Your Say website.

Public consultation is open until 5pm Monday 4 November 2024.

    Purr-fectly Safe Cats Photo Competition

This month, Lane Cove Council wants you to snap a picture of your cat living it up in your home. Not only can you win fun prizes, but you can also help spread the message that cats are not only purr-fectly content indoors, but it’s also safest for them and native wildlife.

The hunting instinct of free-roaming cats comes at a cost to Australian wildlife: over two billion native animals are lost each year. Consider also the perils of busy roads for adventurous fur babies, and investing in what piques their curiosity within the safety of home seems a small price to pay.

The good news is this competition is FREE to enter, you’ll be inspiring local cat lovers to keep their cats safe, and may just take the prize.

Entries close 30 September. Full details + T&Cs
