Lane Cove News Week in Review 2nd October to 9th October 2024

Welcome to our Lane Cove news week in review.  Lane Cove was a bit quieter this week, with some locals taking the opportunity to have a few days off after the long weekend.

    Bushfire Danger Period Begins

The Bush Fire Danger Period began in most NSW Local Government Areas on 1 October 2024.

In the Sydney Basin, open burning for any purpose is not allowed without appropriate written authorisation; in other areas, only fires lit for a particular purpose are permitted and only with appropriate written authorisation.

The NSW Rural Fire Service is planning Hazard Reduction Burning in Hornsby, Ku-ring-gai, and the Hills district in the next few weeks, so you may smell some smoke. Details are here.

    Business Alert

Coffee Brewing House has opened in Lane Cove North on Mowbray Road North in the premises previously occupied by Mowbrew.

Development 1A Epping Road Lane Cove North

Several readers have asked about the development at 1A Epping Road, where the old Sydney City Motorcycles business was located. The old building has been demolished, and a new one containing 70 serviced apartments will be constructed. The building is part 3-story and part 4-story above the existing ground level, and it will include 21 parking spaces, two accessible spaces, one motorcycle space, and six bicycle racks at the basement level.  See our cover photo.

The Old Country Comfort Inn to Be Redeveloped Into a 43 Unit Apartment Building

The Sydney North Planning Panel (SNPP) approved a 43-unit development at 1 Gatacre Avenue and 5 Allison Avenue Lane Cove on October 4, 2024. The development will include two levels of basement parking and 85 parking spaces.

The Lane Cove Council and the Land and Environment Court have rejected previous apartment designs —read more here.

    The SNPP noted:

“The panel concurs with Council that the proposal for dwellings within a high-density residential standard environment while providing appropriate designs, setbacks and landscaping to mitigate impacts to the adjoining R2 zone.  The design responds to the challenging topographic restraints of the site, and the built form appropriately steps with the streetscape transition.”

    Burns Bay Road Paving Upgrade

The Lane Cove Council’s paving contractor will commence the Burns Bay Road paving works this week. Weather permitting, the project is due for completion in December 2024.

The paving portion of the project has been divided into eight stages. To minimise inconvenience and try to maintain as much access as possible to properties and businesses, one stage of paving will be completed before the next one commences. Landscaping works will follow the completion of each stage of the paving works.

A Staging Plan showing the project’s stages is available to view online (please see staging plan). This plan is subject to change, but it is included to demonstrate the various paving stages of the works currently scheduled.

The Council’s paving contractor will commence the work in front of Len Wallis Audio and work up to the Plaza before crossing the road to the Post Office and working toward Tambourine Bay Road. This means that the work from Len Wallis Audio to the Plaza should be completed before the end of November.

The works will be undertaken during the daytime wherever possible; however, to accommodate access to businesses, some work will be required to be undertaken at night. The work hours will be between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. for day work and between 7:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. for night work. Due to RMS requirements, heavy machinery may be moved outside these hours.

    New Bus Shelters in Longueville

Lane Cove Council will install new bus shelters near Kingsford Smith Park to comply with the Disability Discrimination Act.

    World Postie Day – October 9th 2024

We know from posts on Lane Cove Chat by ITC that our local posties are some of the best.
To mark World Post Day, Australia Post is urging all Aussies to watch out for Posties. Data released today shows a 30% increase in Posties injured by a third party on the road.
In the past financial year, 86 Posties sustained injuries as a result of third-party traffic accidents, including broken limbs, concussions, and lacerations, with many resulting in hospital stays, time off work and psychological trauma. Across the country, the most common third-party accident involving Posties was drivers not looking when using or speeding through roundabouts.
“Australia Post has implemented a number of safety measures, including installing telematics (video and data) across most of our fleet of electric delivery vehicles, eDVs, motorcycles, vans, and trucks, but it isn’t just up to us – we are asking all drivers to be alert and keep an eye out for our Posties.” Australia Post General Manager Safety Rod Maule said
Apart from incidents at roundabouts, other third-party accidents involving Posties included drivers:
    • Failing to stop at a Stop sign or Give Way sign
    • Driving distracted by a mobile phone
    • Not leaving enough space to stop safely
“We’d like to remind drivers that our Posties stop frequently and often travel at lower speeds than other vehicles on the road. They can sometimes be easily missed since some vehicles like our eDVs, and motorcycles are smaller than others. Please keep an eye out for the hi-vis and stay alert on the roads so we can continue to deliver for all Australians,” Mr. Maule continued.
