Lane Cove News Week in Review 9th October to 16th October 2024

Welcome to our Lane Cove news week in review. With a new Mayor, the Lane Cove Rotary Fair, and many upcoming events, there is much to report this week. Grab yourself a cuppa, put your feet up, and read all about it!

On Monday, 14th October 2024 (around school pickup time, as it always rains around that time), dark clouds started gathering over Lane Cove, and the rain came bucketing down. Interestingly, only 9mm of rain was recorded from 10th—16th October 2024 at Chatswood Bowling Club (one of the Bureau of Meteorology’s official weather stations). You can compare weather station results here.

Our cover photo was taken at 2.58 pm on Monday 14th October 2024.

    Lane Cove Rotary Fair

Reptiles, rides, sweet and savoury treats and sustainability tips. If you’re not one of the estimated 17,000 people who visited the Lane Cove Rotary Fair and Sustainability Lane on Sunday, 13 October 2024, those buzz words sum up the experience – but do not do it justice.

Bus Capacity Warning For HSC Students

Allow plenty of time if you are catching the 292 or 288 bus (and some other services shown in our photo below). Transport for NSW has warned of delays due to the “bendy buses” being withdrawn from service.

Last week, Transport for NSW withdrew 39 bendy buses from the Northern Beaches. On Saturday, 12th October 2024, Transport for NSW advised that they have withdrawn 83 articulated buses from services across multiple regions after cracking was identified on some buses, including buses servicing the Lane Cove area.

Coordinator-General Howard Collins Transport for NSW said:

“Transport is working with the manufacturer and bus operators on a rectification program and a series of mitigations to ensure over the months ahead; passenger impacts are reduced as much as possible.

“On the Northern Beaches and lower north shore in particular, commuters and school students will notice there are not as many articulated or ‘bendy buses’ on the road and this will reduce capacity,” Mr Collins said.

“We are working with bus operators to limit impacts on passengers, prioritising school services and maximising allocation of the remaining high-capacity fleet to those services of greatest need.

“But we want to be upfront with passengers, replacing articulated buses with standard 2 door city buses does reduce capacity by about a third, so you may see more crowding, some  queuing, and it may take you more time to get to your destination.”

“We are specifically calling out HSC students, and mums, dads and carers to plan your trip.

The community is advised that the routes below are the most likely to be impacted by cancellations and/or heavy loading.

    Greenwich Point Ferry Wharf Update

Construction of the new accessible wharf at Greenwich Point is taking shape.  It has been under construction since the end of April, with an expected project timeline of 8 months. Residents hope the terminal will be operational again in November; however, they understand the lift installation may be taking longer.

See Transport for NSW for more information about this project.

Public Health Warning: Viral Gastroenteritis On The Rise

NSW Health is encouraging the community to stay on alert for symptoms of gastroenteritis, with testing and hospital data showing a significant rise in cases in recent weeks across the state.

The increase is driven by two pathogens that commonly cause vomiting and diarrhoea: rotavirus and norovirus. Rotavirus can be particularly severe in young children, and norovirus is a common cause of outbreaks in residential aged care facilities, schools, and childcare centres.

The latest testing data shows that rotavirus notifications have reached some of their highest levels. NSW Health is urging people to help reduce the spread of this easily transmitted illness, especially as the school term has commenced.

Recently, “there were more than 2,700 presentations to NSW emergency departments with symptoms of gastroenteritis. Presentations were particularly high in children under five years of age,” Ms Glasgow said.

“The message to the community is clear – simple measures can help stop the spread of gastro. Maintaining good hand hygiene and keeping children at home when they are unwell will give us a good chance to slow the spread.”

The symptoms of gastro can include:

    • vomiting
    • diarrhoea
    • nausea
    • fever
    • abdominal pain
    • headache
    • muscle aches
    •  dehydration (from diarrhoea and vomiting)

The most effective treatment is rest and drinking plenty of fluids.

Most people recover without complications, but more urgent care may need to be sought for infants, people with suppressed immune systems, and the elderly, who may experience more severe illness.

Advice for parents and caregivers includes:

    • Keep children experiencing gastroenteritis at home from childcare services, vacation care, and school. Children should not return until 48 hours have passed since their last symptom.
    • Wear gloves and a mask when cleaning up bodily fluids, including vomit.
    • Wash your hands thoroughly and regularly with soap and running water, particularly after changing nappies or assisting someone with diarrhoea and/or vomiting.
    • Immediately and thoroughly clean contaminated surfaces with hot, soapy water and disinfect the area using a household disinfectant.
    • Immediately remove and wash clothing or linen that may be contaminated with stool or vomit (use hot water and detergent).

If you are visiting a loved one in aged care, do not use private (in-room) toilets when visiting. If you have been unwell with an upset stomach or looking after children affected by these symptoms, wait at least 48 hours after your symptoms resolve before visiting.

Immunisation to prevent rotavirus infection is recommended and part of the childhood immunisation schedule. Immunisation is free for children under six months of age. The vaccine is given in two oral doses, at six weeks and four months of age, with completion of the course by 24 weeks.

Australian Red Cross + Uber Partner to Give Your Clothes A New Home

Do you have some quality, vintage or retro designer clothes you want to donate to the Red Cross?

Between 10 am – 4 pm this Saturday, 19 October, you can book a free Uber Package pickup via the Uber app to collect your pre-loved, quality clothes from your doorstep for donation to Australian Red Cross Shops.

The Red Cross shops urgently need high-quality clothing and accessories to sell. Funds raised help them to support people facing vulnerability here in Australia and further afield. Together, we can make a real difference in someone’s life during hardship, disaster, crisis or isolation.

Did you know the average Aussie throws away 23 kg of clothing annually? Shopping second-hand helps conserve environmental resources and reduce landfill waste, so donating your clothes to Australian Red Cross Shops is also a positive step toward sustainability.

Australian Red Cross Shops need quality, saleable clothing and accessories. As a guide, if it’s something you’d feel great about giving to a friend, then it’s perfect to donate!

The Red Cross asks you not to donate poor-quality, damaged, dirty, or stained clothing, homewares, electronics, or other household items.

The better the quality of the donated items, the more funds are raised to support people in need.

See here for full details and the how-to of arranging your Uber collection.

Lane Cove Council Seeking Feedback on Removing Parking Near Lane Cove Village

Lane Cove Council is seeking residents’ and road users’ feedback on a proposal to remove parking along a section of Tambourine Bay Road opposite the Sera Street intersection.

Lane Cove Council has observed northbound cars and buses crossing the Tambourine Bay Road centreline when driving past cars parked along Tambourine Bay Road opposite Sera Street. This is unsafe, particularly for southbound vehicles and cars turning from Sera Street into Tambourine Bay Road.

Cars parked along Tambourine Bay Road opposite Sera Street often park half on the road and half on the verge to lessen their impact on northbound vehicles. NSW Road Rules state that it is illegal to park, or partially park, on the roadway verge.

Feedback must be submitted by 27 October 2024.

    Greenwich Community Association History Walk

On Sunday, 12th October 2024, some locals participated in a Greenwich History Walk. The Greenwich Community Association organised the event, and Denis Smith from the Lane Cove Historical Society led it.

Participants were given a tour of Greenwich and learned about the suburb’s history from the beginning of colonial settlement to the present day.

Due to popular demand and the limited numbers for the walk, the organizers plan to repeat this experience soon for those who missed out.  Subscribe to the Greenwich Community Association newsletter for details.

    Lane Cove Swimming Saturday Club

Saturday Morning Swim Club begins this Saturday, 19th October 2024, at 7 am.

Saturday Morning Club is held in the 50m pool at Lane Cove Aquatic Centre from 7 am each Saturday through the Summer swimming season (October-March).

Swimmers race in up to three races each Saturday.

On a rotating calendar, race distances of 25m, 50m, 100m, 200m, and 400m are offered. Race times are recorded to track progress, and cumulative point scores contribute to awards at the LCSC Annual Presentation Event.

Entries are undertaken via Swim Central or emailing [email protected]

For each race you swim, your time is recorded. Points are then calculated based on the difference between your graded and recorded times on the day. These points count towards the Summer Club Point Score. There are numerous age categories for each gender, plus a Family Point Score if more than one family member swims.
