Lane Cove News Week in Review 6th November to 13th November 2024

Welcome to our week in review.

    Lane Cove Remembers

Monday 11 November 2024 was Remembrance Day.

The Lane Cove RSL sub branch and the Lane Cove Council held a service in the Lane Cove Plaza.
For the 2024 Lane Cove Remembrance Day Service Lane Cove RSL Sub Branch featured a presentation about Private John Canham Hackett, who has served in the Australian armed forces. The presentation was fascinating as it provided an insight into Private Hackett’s military life and their life after their time in the armed forces.

Numerous local veterans, organisations, politicians and local schools laid wreaths.

Former Lane Cove Mayor Ian Longbottom, was asked to read the biography of Private John Hackett, who was always known as Jack.

You can read the presentation here.

    Diwali

Lane Cove Diwali Fest 2024 concluded on 9th November, celebrating the vibrant spirit of culture, community, and diversity! With the timeless theme of Diwali, bringing forth the inner light to dispel darkness inside and out, it was a heartwarming occasion of reflection, unity, and hope for the greater good.

The festival kicked off with a beautiful rangoli (see our cover photo) at the Lane Cove Library, symbolising the light and colour Diwali brings to our lives.

Over 30 performers graced the stage on 9th November 2024, including:

Irish Dance by Spreagadh na Rince

Japanese Dance by Sydney Japanese Dance

Bharatanatyam by Margam Centre for Arts

Mohiniyattam Darsana Arun and Close-up Magic Shubhan Amlani

A vibrant Multicultural Fashion Show showcasing stunning Japanese, Indian, Iranian, Filipino, and African attire, concluding with the Indian and Australian National Anthems.

Since its inception in 2019, Lane Cove Diwali Fest, founded by Balu Moothedath, Balu MV President of Lane Cove Indian Community, has become Lane Cove’s largest multicultural event and perhaps the most prominent celebration of its kind in the Lower North Shore. Even during the COVID years, the tradition was kept alive through online events.

Accident at Pathways Development on Longueville Road

On Tuesday, 12th November, a workplace accident occurred at the Pathways development on Longueville Road.  Traffic came to a standstill as emergency services were in attendance and the site was shut down.

NSW Ambulance media has advised that two men were injured on the site after they fell from scaffolding. Two men were taken to hospital in a stable condition. One man in his 40’s had a head injury, and the other man in his 30’s had an arm injury.

When ITC visited the site, work had halted, and a person who saw the men being put into ambulances said he was told that a man had fallen about 2 1/2 m from scaffolding. As he was falling, he reached out and grabbed another man who had fallen on top of him.

This is the second time an industrial accident has occurred at a Pathways site in the Lane Cove Council area. In September 2022 a traffic controller was seriously injured when a concrete pipe burst and she fell into a hole – read more here.

Lane Cove North to Become 40km/h Zone with New Speed Reduction Measures

Lane Cove North will soon see significant changes aimed at improving safety and encouraging more walking and cycling, as a suite of speed reduction measures is introduced throughout the area.

The changes, including a 40km/h speed limit across most local streets, are designed to reduce traffic speeds, discourage rat-running, and enhance the community’s walkability.

The initiative is being funded by Transport for NSW through the Safe Speeds in High Pedestrian Areas program.

In total, the project will feature 18 speed humps and eight intersection treatments, transforming key streets into safer environments for pedestrians and cyclists. The speed limit changes will apply across all streets in Lane Cove North, except major roads like Mowbray Road, Pacific Highway, and Epping Road.

Lane Cove Council received positive feedback from the community during its consultation earlier this year, with most respondents in favour of the proposed changes. Work on the project officially began in October 2024, with the installation of speed humps already underway.

The following treatments will be implemented over the coming months:

    • Continuous footpath treatments on Willandra Street, Mindarie Street, and Girraween Avenue at the Mowbray Road intersection.
    • Continuous footpath treatments on Elizabeth Parade, Arding Street, and Canberra Street at the Centennial Avenue intersection.
    • Speed humps along various local streets as outlined in the locality plan.
    • Raised pedestrian crossing on Helen Street at Goodlet Reserve.
    • Installation of 2-metre parking lanes and 3-metre travel lanes on Karilla Avenue (between Centennial Avenue and Kurri Street) to visually narrow the street and slow traffic.
    • A raised pedestrian crossing on Karilla Avenue at the Centennial Avenue intersection, along with the removal of the existing pedestrian refuge.
    • Rumble strip on Karilla Avenue at the Kurri Street intersection.
    • Pedestrian refuge on Burley Street at the Pacific Highway intersection.
    • Raised pedestrian crossings on all approaches to the Mindarie Street/Kullah Parade/Hatfield Street intersection.
    • Upgraded signage and line markings to support the new measures.

These enhancements are expected to significantly improve the safety of local residents and make Lane Cove North a more pedestrian-friendly area in the months ahead.

    Shrek The Musical On Now!

Lane Cove Theatre Company ‘s production of Shrek opened on Friday night to an enthusiastic reception from theatregoers, who enjoyed the fun-filled show.

The production features the talents of many young local performers, showcasing their singing, acting and dancing skills. The costumes are fabulous, and clever set design and props make the most of the stage.

A spokesperson for LCTC told ITC, “It was a great opening weekend! The kids have worked so hard over the last three months rehearsing so it is always a triumph when the show opens to a great audience. Only a handful of tickets left for Friday 15 and Friday 22. All other shows have sold out.”

ITC also spoke to some young theatregoers to get their reactions.

“I liked it when they were trying to explain to Princess Fiona that Lord Farquaad is short – so funny! Also the music and the songs were fun.” Matilda, 9.

“Shrek the Musical Jr.” – a magical, family-friendly adaptation of the beloved movie, brought to life under the brilliant direction of Catherine Walmsley-Timmins and Daniel Timmins, with music by Jeanine Tesori and book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire.

Sydney Community Service’s new Memory Centre.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) recently released information on Australia’s leading causes of death. Ischaemic heart disease was still the nation’s leading cause of death in 2023 but was closely followed by dementia-related deaths.

Sydney Community Services works hard in our community to support people with Dementia and their carers.  They have launched the Memory Centre — a place for locals suffering from dementia and their carers to be in a supportive environment.

Find out more about the memory centre here.

Another great service offered by Sydney Community Services is in-home podiatry. See the flyer below for details.
