A few weeks ago, a Lane Cove Chat by an ITC member posted our cover photo and noted how well-behaved the dogs were in the Lane Cove Post Office.
There were three types of comments on the post:
- Dogs are prohibited in Post Offices, and people should not bring dogs inside.
- Don’t know if dogs are allowed or not, but dogs should not be permitted in a carpeted area for hygiene reasons; and
- How nice that you can bring your dog to the Lane Cove Post Office.
What are the Rules About Taking a Dog Into the Lane Cove Post Office?
This got In the Cove thinking: What are the rules about bringing a pet into an Australian Post Office?
Our research found no information about dogs on the Australia Post website. There was one media article where Australia Post had developed a dog-friendly parking area at the Noosa Post Office, but that was it,
We then asked the Australia Post Media Team for the official position on pets in Australia Post offices.
A spokesperson for Australia Post told us the following:
“Post Offices come in various formats, including Corporate outlets as well as Licensed Post Offices which are run as local small independent businesses. Many local Post Offices also operate in conjunction with other businesses including pharmacies, newsagents and supermarkets.
The admittance of pets is at the discretion of the individual Post Office or in some cases the property landlord.
Australia Post welcomes accredited Assistance dogs into our outlets. Those bringing other dogs in may be asked to leave if the dog is deemed to be putting the safety of customers and people in the post office at risk.”
We then checked the conditions of entry at the Lane Cove Australia Post office front door. There was no mention of pets being prohibited.
Lane Cove Post Office is run by Australia Post; it is not a licensed outlet.
Keep Your Dogs Away From Posties
However, Australia Post issues numerous press releases about Australia Post posties being attacked by dogs and steps you can take to ensure our posties are protected.
We published an article last year about how Australia Post loves its posties, but we were not so sure about its couriers—read more here.
So, if you want to take your dog to the Lane Cove Post Office, it is permitted.
