Get Involved in Lane Cove Council’s Environment Week

    World Environment Day is on 5th June 2025.

    Last year Lane Cove Council ‘s sustainability efforts were recognised at the Local Government NSW Excellence in Environment Awards where Lane Cove took out three Awards, including the prestigious Local Sustainability Award.

    Held annually, the Excellence in the Environment Awards recognise outstanding achievements by NSW local government in managing and protecting the environment.

    Last year, Lane Cove Council was awarded:

    • Category winner for the Towards Net Zero Emissions Award for our programs to reduce emissions
    • Winner of the Innovation in Planning Policies and Decision-Making Award for our sustainability review of our DCP
    • Overall winner of the Local Sustainability Award for our work in implementing sustainability and striving for a sustainable future for our community.

    Lane Cove Environment Week

    Building on this base, Lane Cove Council is committed to protecting Lane Cove’s natural environment and taking strong climate action. Inspired by World Environment Day on 5 June, Lane Cove is holding a series of events from 2-8 June 2025 for Lane Cove Environment Week. 

    This lineup of events aims to inspire, educate, connect, and act for a more sustainable future. Get involved and help us protect our amazing local environment!

    Coffee and Climate Session: the Australian Museum Comes to Lane Cove!

    Film Screening: 2040 by Damon Gameau

    Join us to explore what the future could look like by the year 2040 if society embraced the best climate solutions already available to us.

    Join us on Wednesday 4th for a screening of 2040 by award-winning film director, Damon Gameau (That Sugar Film), which explores what the future could look like by the year 2040 if we simply embraced the best climate solutions already available to us. Structured as a visual letter to his 4-year-old daughter, Damon blends traditional documentary with dramatised sequences and high-end visual effects to create a vision board of how these solutions could regenerate the world for future generations. This film is being presented by Lane Cove Council as part of our World Environment Week activities to celebrate World Environment Day on June 5th.     Food and drink: Some light refreshments will be provided before the film, so attendees should ensure they arrive with enough time to grab a small plate of food and be seated by 6:10pm. Feel free to bring your own movie snacks to consume during the film.

    Harbourcare Kayak x World Environment Day

    Come along adn paddle to clean up Lane Cove’s local waterways

    World Environment Day is a chance to reflect on our relationship with the ecosystems around us and take action to make a positive local impact!

    Join Lane Cove Council’s Harbourcare team for a kayak along the Lane Cove River, collecting litter along the foreshore as we explore and protect this beautiful environment.

     

    NEW: BRING YOUR OWN kayak options available! Paid tickets include kayak hire.

    If you have registered for a FREE BRING YOUR OWN KAYAK ticket, there will not be a hire kayak provided for you – please BYO!

    Medium level fitness required; a little kayaking experience preferred but not necessary.

    Minimum age 11 years old. Under 16 years must be accompanied by an adult.

    Bags, gloves and litter pickers provided.

    Must wear enclosed shoes to attend. Wear sun-smart, light clothing that can get wet.

    BYO water. COVID-safe & low waste snack & drink provided.

    No corporate bookings allowed; Max. 2 tickets per group.

    World Environment Day: Growing Native Wildflowers

    Learn how to grow native plants from cuttings, in keeping with the theme ‘We are #GenerationRestoration’!

    In keeping with the theme, we are #GenerationRestoration, learn how to grow native plants from cuttings. This useful propagation technique can be applied to many local wildflowers such as Grevillea and Correa as well as your own garden plants.

    Learning to grow plants is a great practical skill to have in creating habitat and supporting a healthy planet.

    This workshop is for people aged 16 years and over.

    ABC Animal Walk – Lane Cove Bush Kids

    Thursday, 05 June 2025 | 09:45 AM to 11:15 AM

     

    Term activity 2 – 5 years

    Encourage your child to learn their ABCs. We’ll sing the ABC song and learn the Aussie animal alphabet. We’ll also go on an ABC bush walk, make our own nature letter and decorate one of our own to take home.

    Please cancel your booking and stay at home if you or your child are unwell or you’re no longer attending.

    REFUNDS UP TO SEVEN DAYS PRIOR TO EVENT ONLY.

    • Tickets are essential for both adults and children for all activities. Once children’s spots are booked out, any remaining adult spots are NOT to be used for children. Please purchase a ticket for each child over 2 years that are attending the activity.
    • Activities are for 2 to 5 years during term time, 3 to 12 years during school holidays unless otherwise specified.
    • Children must be accompanied by an adult and supervised by adults at all times on the activity.
    • Most activities are NOT stroller friendly, and walks are on unsealed bush tracks.

    Join Lane Cove Council for this interactive session and empower yourself in how we can all contribute to climate solutions!

    The Greatest Opportunity of Our Time: Why a changing climate is the perfect backdrop for more resilient communities.

    Dive in and explore what climate action looks like in 2025, examine what is changing, and what the local risks and opportunities are for us in Lane Cove.

    Participants will be involved in an interactive workshop to:

    • Learn how we all play a critical role in creating lasting change.
    • Understand the barriers and approaches for change on a personal, community and organisational level.
    • Learn about organisations and communities that are leading the charge on climate action with practical takeaways.

    Jo Taranto is a sustainability communicator and founder of Good for the Hood. She works with residents and providers to deliver climate mitigation and adaptation solutions at a grassroots level.

    World Environment Day – Berrys Creek

    Help plant seedlings and restore the bush as part of #GenerationRestoration this World Environment Day.

    Celebrate World Environment Day on a guided walk through the peaceful woodland and rainforest of Berrys Creek. Discover how this urban green corridor supports a variety of native wildlife such as possums and even the majestic Powerful Owl. Then spend some time planting seedlings and restoring the bushland, doing your bit as part of #GenerationRestoration. All equipment and refreshments provided.
