Lane Cove Council Says No To CCTV to Stop Illegal Dumping at Blackman Park

Over the last couple of months, Lane Cove Chat by ITC members have been noting that Blackman Park is becoming a dumping ground and have queried what steps Lane Cove Council can take to stop the dumping.  Suggestions have included CCTV and locking the gates at night.

Lane Cove Chat by ITC member Bronwyn noted the following:

    “So so angry 😡
Down at Blackman Park this morning just after 6am only to see yet another large pile of rubbish that had been dumped. This time not in the same spot as the last 6 weeks, today’s rubbish dump was at the very end of the car park at the little turning bay where the BBQ and playing area.
I couldn’t get a decent picture as it was still too dark”

In the Cove asked Lane Cove Council what steps they could take to deter dumping at Blackman Park.
A spokesperson for Lane Cove Council advised the following:

“Council is very much aware of the dumping occurring regularly in Blackman Park. The park has not been closed overnight for many years.

While we’ve considered CCTV, CCTV requires lighting of the area in order to capture footage. If we were to install CCTV, the light would likely deter offenders only in that particular location. As it is, the offender/s also dump in different areas of the park so there is no clear pattern.

Council does as much as we can to deter illegal dumping (education, signage, regular patrols), but unless we hire security overnight every night of the week, it is very difficult to stop. Our rangers do try to find identifying details in the rubbish that is dumped, and fine the appropriate people after the fact, in a bid to deter future dumping.”
