Lane Cove Council’s Get That Job Success Story – Nick P

For the last couple of years, Lane Cove Council has been holding seminars aimed at residents who have been made redundant or are having a hard time getting a job.  The workshops are called Get That Job and are well attended.

Nick P participated in the workshop, and this is his story.

I had been out of work for a few months when a local “Get That Job” workshop caught my eye. As I have always been a curious person, I decided to investigate further and ended up registering for the next available session.

On the day, the facilitator, Mike Taylor, laid out the main areas we would be focusing on, including the usual stuff like writing CVs, job application cover letters, the current state of the job market, etc.

He then asked us to tell him what we wanted to get out of the 4 hours we had available. This level of flexibility, customising the workshop to our individual needs and the three-way communication and sharing of ideas that followed was extremely useful and fun!

My highlights:

Reinventing yourself, not getting too comfortable in your chosen field and how to keep learning new skills whilst also staying focused and humble!

The hidden job market, did you know that between 70-80% of jobs are never advertised? Mike offered real scenarios and tips on how to go about discovering these hidden jobs!

Another highlight were the participants! There was so much wealth of knowledge and experience in our small group of 10 or 12 people! So many networking opportunities and believe it or not, a few of us had things in common (travel, languages, interests, etc.,).

Wait ,there’s more!

One of the best things about this workshop is the community you join afterwards.

First, there’s the weekly coffee catchups to ‘check-in’ and run ideas past Mike.

Then there are interview practice sessions, which I found valuable. I had been selling myself short in previous interviews and knew I had to sort a few things out! After doing two sessions, I was much more confident and able to address my weaknesses in real-life interviews!

Mike also makes a clear distinction between preparing for online interviews and the more traditional in-person ones.

I wholeheartedly recommend anyone looking for a job, or even someone in a job but looking to change direction, to sign up for the next workshop.

Within a month of finishing the workshop I was able to get many more interviews and about six weeks after that, a job!

Thank you, Mike.
