Express Yourself 2025 – Lane Cove Public School

Last week, the walls of Gallery Lane Cove burst to life with colour, creativity, and joy as Lane Cove Public School hosted its much-loved annual art show. This year’s theme was: “Express Yourself”.

Held from 12 to 16 August, the exhibition showcased an incredible array of artworks from students in Kindergarten to Year 6. From bold abstract paintings to detailed sculptures, every piece was created during the school’s Visual Arts enrichment program and displayed in a professional gallery setting.

Artworks by a Year 2 class

Each class worked with art consultant Liz Dunn across Terms 1 and 2 to create their individual artworks. Liz helped guide students through a series of workshops over three weeks designed to inspire individual expression and teach practical artistic techniques.

The gallery was packed for the opening night on Tuesday 12 August, with proud parents, siblings, teachers, and grandparents all mingling and admiring the wide variety of student work. The buzz in the room was as vibrant as the art on display.

This year’s theme “Express Yourself”, encouraged students to explore identity, nature, emotion and storytelling through art. The result was a thoughtful, colourful, and often surprising mix of styles and ideas.

The exhibition is not just a showcase – it’s a milestone. For many students, this was their first time presenting their work publicly and in a real gallery no less.

This year’s event was also timed perfectly with Education Week and just before the school’s Book Week Parade, adding to the celebration of learning and imagination.

Lane Cove Public School’s annual art exhibition has become a much-anticipated part of the Lane Cove cultural calendar – a heartwarming reminder of how powerful creativity can be, especially when supported by schools, families, and local spaces like Gallery Lane Cove.

Repair | Replace 20 August – 13 September Opening Event: 27 August 6 pm – 8 pm

Artists: Ra Bull, Deirdre Boeyen-Carmichael, Gary Deirmendjian, Jane Gillings + Lucy Barker, Gary Gregg, Pim Van Nunen, Alice Xu.

Repair | Replace brings together artists who rethink our relationship with the planet through the materials we choose, the stories we tell, and the structures we sustain.

Prompted by the simple provocation that if we don’t repair our relationship with the planet, we ourselves may be replaced, it presents painting, installation, and object-based practices, exploring cycles of damage and renewal.

Some artists engage with salvaged materials and whilst others foreground material culture to reflect on consumption and the possibilities of care and transformation.
