Welcome to our week in review.
Lane Cove Council Gives Green Light To Food Waste Service
The NSW Government requires all councils to provide a weekly Food Organics (FO) or Food & Garden Organics (FOGO) collection service by 1 July 2030.
Last week, in our article on the Council meeting agenda items, we shared that Lane Cove Council was to vote on adopting a food waste service as part of their regular waste collection services.
The recommendation to adopt a weekly Food Organics (FO) collection service was passed by a 7 – 2 vote, with Councillors Bennison and Taylor against.
The plan is for a phased rollout of the program, beginning in March 2026 with standalone houses. Residents will receive a maroon-lidded (not purple as we reported last week) kitchen caddy bin and compostable bin liners to dispose of food organics.
This would be a fifth waste bin for residents; red for residual garbage, blue for paper and cardboard, yellow for other recyclables such as bottles and cans, green for garden waste and now a maroon kitchen caddy.
The alternate option, a combined food organics and garden organics (FOGO) collection service, where the existing fortnightly green bin is repurposed to a weekly mixed food and garden waste collection service, was also considered in the report tabled to Council.
Factors such as the cost of implementation and processing, rates of contamination by non-organic products, and the flow-on effect on the quality of compost produced were all part of the recommendation to adopt the FO program instead.
Earlier this year, In the Cove informed locals that Lane Cove Council was undertaking a kerbside bins audit. The audit found that the average household in Lane Cove LGA throws away 3.55kg of food per week. That’s over 3,500 tonnes per year.
OzHarvest recently commissioned the Half Eaten: Australian Household Food Waste Research report, which surveyed over 3,000 households and found that younger Australians were throwing away 113kg of food each year – wasting over 70% more food than their parents’ generation. The ideal solution is to stop the food waste before it reaches the bin by changing buying and eating patterns. Food Waste contributes to landfill and emits methane as is rots. Read the report here.
The indicative rollout is:
Start date: Target March 2026.
Initial rollout: Standalone houses → provided with 60L or 80L maroon-lidded FO bin + kitchen caddy with liners.
Second stage (2026/27): Extend to units/apartments (opt-in initially, then full rollout by 2030).

Ready For A Scandalous Night Out?
Lane Cove Theatre Company’s latest production The School For Scandal, opened on 22nd August 2026 to rave reviews.
David Kary wrote for Sydney Arts Guide, “ Lane Cove Theatre Company’s production, as directed by Christine Firkin, is very lively and a lot of fun.” and “The cast gave committed, high-energy performances. The two likely lads. Samuel Chapman as Joseph Surface and Benjamin Walsh as Charles Surface and Mr Crabtree, gave confident, flamboyant performances.
This is a classic comic romp to be enjoyed. Enrol in this school for scandal. You will get to meet some very colourful characters. And it is scandalicious.” read David’s full review here.
Lane Cove local Jeannie Gee posted this review on Lane Cove Chat by ITC;
“Just home from a superb night of theatre. School For Scandal performed by our wonderful Lane Cove Theatre. Whether you’re a die-hard fan of classic theatre or simply love a good dose of drama with a lot of fun thrown in, this is one show you won’t want to miss.”
