Lane Cove News Week in Review 24th September to 1st October 2025

Welcome to our week in review.  Lane Cove was again buzzing on the weekend with activities all over Lane Cove as the Lane Cove Festival with Sydney Fringe enters its final week.  However, don’t fret, as the Lane Cove Rotary Fair and Sustainability Lane is on 12 October 2025,  which is less than two weeks away.

Goodbye Minas

After an incredible 37 years in Lane Cove, Minas (also known as Michael) from Lane Cove Shoe Repairs is hanging up his tools. With only about two weeks before he closes, now’s the time to pop into the Lane Cove Arcade to say goodbye and thank him for decades of service.

From shoes and handbags to the countless keys he has cut for locals, Minas/Michael has been a true part of the fabric of our community.

Thank you, Minas/Michael – you will be missed.

Those needing shoe repairs or key cutting after Lane Cove Shoe Repair closes can still find a shoe repair and key cutting business in Lane Cove, located at The Village Shopping Centre (behind the Post Office). We know that as a top In the Cove FAQ is: “Does anyone know a place to get shoes repaired in Lane Cove?”

Two Power Outages

There were two power outages in the Lane Cove Council area this week.

The first one impacted residents and businesses on Burns Bay Road and Tambourine Bay Road.   Power was out on Burns Bay Road from the lights to The Village Shopping Centre.  The outage started on the afternoon of Wednesday, 24th September, and continued into the evening of 25th September 2025.  An underground transformer had blown.

The other power outage affected Lane Cove North, Lane Cove, Artarmon, St Leonards, Greenwich, Longueville, and Northwood early in the morning on 26 September 2025.

ITC Launches Investigations into the Cumulative Impact of Data Centres and the Impact of Infrastructure and the Community.

In the Cove is investigating the impacts that data centres have on the community, including the infrastructure required (water and electricity), the local services needed to support these data centres, such as NSW Fire and Rescue, as well as noise and air pollution issues.
We have already uncovered some interesting findings. Lane Cove West residents have been impacted for months by the work undertaken by Sydney Water contractors, Interflow, to provide a water supply to the existing Airtrunk Data Centre in Lane Cove West. Read more here.
Airtrunk is currently seeking to expand its operations to include another data centre next door to its existing operation. Airtrunk’s 2019 environmental impact statement and water quality report did not provide any information on the volume of water needed to run their data centres.
Are data centres being developed too fast without the infrastructure in place to support them?

Big news for Lane Cove West Tennis Club at Blackman Park!

The Club has just been awarded almost $42,000 through the Tennis NSW Facility Enhancement Fund.

This funding will be used to replace the fencing around the courts – the first stage of a master plan to rejuvenate the venue. Once the fencing is complete, resurfacing of Courts 1 and 3 will follow.

Looking further ahead, the Club is also exploring:

  • Refurbishing the clubhouse
  • Landscaping improvements
  • Possible upgrades to the toilet block and small cabana near Court 2

Congratulations to Lane Cove West Tennis Club – this is a big win for the local tennis community!

If you would like to book a court or join the club, please refer to the details provided here.

Lane Cove Council Launches Cinema Club

Lane Cove Council has announced the launch of Cinema Club, a new initiative designed to bring the community together through the magic of film.

The program shines a spotlight on independent cinema and global storytelling, featuring non-English language works and films from underrepresented filmmakers. More than just a screening series, Cinema Club is about fostering connection, conversation, and a shared love of cinema.

Each month, audiences are invited to the Pottery Lane Performance Space for a 6:30 pm screening, followed by a lively post-film discussion. The conversation doesn’t end there—locals can continue exchanging ideas over drinks at the Longueville Hotel.

Cinema Club has collaborated with a range of partners to curate its program. Highlights include Awesome Black, showcasing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander films, the Taiwan Film Festival, and the Queer Screen Film Festival, ensuring a diverse and exciting lineup for Lane Cove audiences.

As a community-led initiative, Cinema Club is welcoming input from members on future screenings and additions to its growing film library. A sign-up link will be available soon for those interested in getting involved.

Crime Report

Intruders Lane Cove and Riverview

The following was posted on Lane Cove Chat by ITC:

“My neighbours on Tambourine Bay Rd (Lane Cove side of River Rd) asked me to post this on their behalf. They had an attempted break-in at 3.45 am this morning. Fortunately, someone was awake and scared them off. Police were called and believe they were targeting their car and trying to break in to access the keys.”

There were three people with hoodies and masks.   Another member noted the following:

“They were in Riverview on Wednesday night as well. I had the police ring my doorbell at 3 am to ask if I’d seen anything.”

Police Operation 25 September 2025 at Artarmon BP

Our roving reporters spotted a police operation on 25th September 2025 on the Pacific Highway at the BP Artarmon (right next to KFC). Traffic was heavy around 6.00 pm and it was challenging to access BP for petrol. The Police Media Unit told In the Cove the following:

“A man has been arrested following a vehicle stop and subsequent foot pursuit at Artarmon yesterday.

About 5.30 pm yesterday (Thursda,y 25 September 2025), officers attached to North Shore PAC stopped the driver of a blue BMW sedan on Epping Road, Lane Cove.

The driver – a 55-year-old man – was subjected to a roadside drug test, which returned an alleged positive result for methylamphetamine.

Police searched the vehicle and located a quantity of what police will allege in Court to be heroin.

The driver then ran off and, following a foot pursuit on Burley Street, the man was arrested after falling to the ground.

The man was treated at the scene by NSW Ambulance Paramedics before being taken to Royal North Shore hospital for treatment for a broken arm.

Inquiries into the incident continue.”
