Kicking Goals for Lane Cove – New AFL Posts Installed at Lane Cove Public School

Lane Cove Public School students kicked off Term 4 with a big surprise — brand-new AFL goal posts on the school oval.

The best part about the new goal posts is that the idea came straight from the students themselves.

At the Term 3 P&C General Meeting, the Student Representative Council (SRC) presented a thoughtful wish list for outdoor play, with AFL goal posts at the top of their list.

P&C President Caleb Taylor said the project came to life thanks to incredible local collaboration:

“Following the meeting, I reached out to the Lane Cove Cats AFL, and thanks to the amazing efforts of Glenn Poynton, President of the Lane Cove Cats Junior AFL Club, and the AFL NSW/ACT team, the Posts in the Park program was able to cover the costs of the project. AFL NSW/ACT worked closely with Mr McKinnon to ensure the installation happened over the school holidays, keeping disruption to a minimum and giving the students a fantastic Term 4 surprise when they returned.”

Glenn Poynton, President of the Lane Cove Cats Junior AFL Club, said:

“It’s fantastic to see new AFL goal posts standing tall at Lane Cove Public School — a great addition that will help grow the game locally and give more kids a chance to kick their first goal”

Principal Terry McKinnon shared his excitement:

“The students are so happy to have the new AFL goalposts and they will be well used. Lane Cove Public School has a long-standing relationship with the AFL. We thank the AFL, the Lane Cove Cats and the Lane Cove P&C for their support in providing this fantastic addition to the school.”

This is yet another positive step in the school’s ongoing renewal journey. Since the devastating 2020 hall and canteen fire, Lane Cove Public School has seen an inspiring transformation over the last couple years:

  • The official opening of its new hall earlier this year
  • The addition of revamped basketball courts
  • New netball nets installed
  • An eco learning hub (where students can help maintain a community-style garden)
  • A new canteen
  • New shade structures
  • A chicken coop
  • … and now brand new AFL goal posts

(read more about the school’s journey here).

The new AFL posts will provide opportunities for unstructured play, skill development and good old-fashioned outdoor fun — all part of AFL NSW/ACT’s Posts in the Park and Schools initiative, which helps local parks and schools install goal posts to encourage more green time over screen time.

A huge congratulations to the Lane Cove P&CLane Cove Cats AFLAFL NSW/ACTPrincipal  McKinnon, and, of course, the SRC for showing what’s possible when our community teams up for the benefit of students.

If You Buy Us A Coffee, it is, in fact, helping to pay the ITC Team

We want to clarify that, yes, the ITC team does support local businesses by drinking coffee, but there is a limit to the number of cups you can drink in a day.

We started the Buy Us A Coffee Campaign as a way to keep local news free and to grow our team.  Our team is now comprised of three local mums who work part-time to bring you all the up-to-date news, traffic alerts, incidents, and events.  We also now have Walkley Award Nominee Jack Kelly writing articles for us, as well as founder Jacky Barker.  We truly appreciate any help you can provide, whether large or small.

How local journalism keeps communities engaged

Local newsrooms play a vital role in keeping communities informed and engaged with the decisions that affect them. Without dedicated coverage of local government, infrastructure, and policy changes, many residents are left uninformed about issues that significantly impact their daily lives. Independent newsrooms help bridge this gap, providing a trusted source of information and giving people a platform to voice concerns. Strong local reporting doesn’t just inform, it fosters public participation and strengthens civic engagement. – extract from the Local and Independent News Association Website
