Lane Cove Man Jailed Over Child Abuse Material

On Friday 21 November a man, 78, was sentenced by the Downing Centre District Court to two years and four months’ jail for child abuse material offences. He will be eligible for parole after serving one year and two months. We are requesting a copy of the file from the District Court and will provide further details later in the week.

The Lane Cove man previously pleaded guilty to three counts of possessing child abuse material accessed or obtained using a carriage service, contrary to section 474.22A of the Criminal Code (Cth).

    Detective Sergeant Nicole Kenny said:

“Children are not commodities to be used for the abhorrent gratification of sexual predators.

“The AFP is committed to protecting the innocence of our youth from the lifelong harm and pain caused by the crimes of predators based in Australia and around the world.

“Our investigators should not have to be exposed to the vast quantity of horrific child abuse material found across the internet but are committed to taking every step to combat this horrific crime and bring those responsible to justice.”

The AFP and its partners are committed to stopping child exploitation and abuse and the Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation (ACCCE) is driving a collaborative national approach.

The ACCCE brings together specialist expertise and skills in a central hub, supporting investigations into online child sexual exploitation and developing prevention strategies focused on creating a safer online environment.

Members of the public who have information about people involved in child abuse are urged to contact the ACCCE. If you know abuse is happening right now, or a child is at risk, call police immediately on 000.

If you, or someone you know, is impacted by child sexual abuse and online exploitation, support services are available.

Research conducted by the ACCCE in 2020 revealed only about half of parents talked to their children about online safety. Advice and support for parents and carers about how they can help protect children online can be found at the ThinkUKnow website, an AFP-led education program designed to prevent online child sexual exploitation.

For more information on the role of the ACCCE, what is online child sexual exploitation and how to report it visit the ACCCE website.

    Be Aware Of Parcel Theft

The following was posted on Lane Cove Chat By ITC on Sunday 23rd November:

“Hi Lane Covians! Just a heads-up that parcel theft has started up again now that we’re getting closer to Christmas.

I’m on Gordon Crescent and had a few parcels taken from the ground floor this week. I even left a note yesterday hoping a neighbour might return them, but this morning I found my other neighbours’ parcels opened and torn as well.

Please be careful and maybe avoid giving authority to leave for any upcoming deliveries. Stay safe and keep an eye out for each other!”

At 4.50 pm on the 3rd of November, police stopped a blue Honda Jazz, allegedly driven by the Granville man, on Military Road, Neutral Bay for the purposes of random testing.

Police had a conversation with the man, and he allegedly presented a New South Wales Class C Provisional P1 driver’s licence. Police allegedly observed that the male was using his mobile phone, and that the vehicle did not have any P Plates displayed.

The 19-year-old was subjected to a breath test, which allegedly returned a positive result. The man was arrested and conveyed to North Sydney Police Station for the purpose of a breath analysis.

At the station, the male submitted to a breath analysis and returned a reading of 0.048 grams of alcohol in 210 litres of breath. Whilst at North Sydney Police Station, the Granville man was also submitted to an oral fluid test which police will allege in court returned a positive result to Cocaine and Cannabis.

If You Buy Us A Coffee, it is, in fact, helping to pay the ITC Team

We want to clarify that, yes, the ITC team does support local businesses by drinking coffee, but there is a limit to the number of cups you can drink in a day.

We started the Buy Us A Coffee Campaign as a way to keep local news free and to grow our team.  Our team is now comprised of three local mums who work part-time to bring you all the up-to-date news, traffic alerts, incidents, and events.  We also now have Walkley Award Nominee Jack Kelly writing articles for us, as well as founder Jacky Barker.  We truly appreciate any help you can provide, whether large or small.

How local journalism keeps communities engaged

Local newsrooms play a vital role in keeping communities informed and engaged with the decisions that affect them. Without dedicated coverage of local government, infrastructure, and policy changes, many residents are left uninformed about issues that significantly impact their daily lives. Independent newsrooms help bridge this gap, providing a trusted source of information and giving people a platform to voice concerns. Strong local reporting doesn’t just inform, it fosters public participation and strengthens civic engagement. – extract from the Local and Independent News Association Website
