On the night of the 31 May 1942 World War II arrived on Sydney doorsteps with a bang! Suddenly World War II became real and not something that was happening elsewhere. Home defences went through a major overhaul with gun emplacements along the harbour added to and upgraded. Slit trenches were built in the grounds of churches and schools, some families even dug air raid shelters in their backyards and small arms sales went through the roof as families sought to protect their own.
