A Kallaroo Road Riverview family have lost their house of 30 years after a fire gutted the home in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
A man and a woman and their son managed to escape the house unharmed. They also managed to save their dog. Eyewitnesses said they were relieved to hear someone call out that there was no-one in the house. The blaze was intense and could be seen across Riverview. Neighbouring houses were evacuated as a precautionary measure.
New South Wales Fire and Rescue advised ITC that six fire trucks and one ladder truck attended the scene (in total 27 firefighters). They received the 000 call at 12.45 am and the majority of the fire was extinguished at 2 am. Two Fire Trucks remained at the site putting out hot spots until fire investigators arrived the next day. The intensity of the fire meant that the house was completely gutted and could not be saved.
The exact cause of the fire is not known however the most probable cause is an electrical fault in the lounge room (possibly a power point). The Living Room floor was completely destroyed so it too dangerous for fire investigators to carry out a complete investigation.
This is the fourth major fire in the Lane Cove Council area in less than a year. In September last year the Lane Cove 12ft Skiff Sailing Club shed burnt down, then a fire in William Edward Street (caused by an electrical fault) and then another fire in Merinda Street.
Any electrical device that gives off heat is a potential source of ignition and may catch fire. It is a good idea to test your smoke alarms (which is always encouraged around daylight savings time) and have an escape plan. Remember to tell your kids get down low and go go go.
