FABRIC PRINTS, STENCILS + MONOTYPES

Introductory Workshop on Textiles Printmaking with Vivien Haley.

The workshop introduces two simple printmaking methods that can be applied to any form of art or craft where fabric and textiles are used. They can be used as a repeat pattern, placement or border print for visual art, wall hangings, soft furnishing or placement prints for clothing.

The Workshop.

The aim of the workshop is to create two or three motifs and prints encompassing these techniques. Creating a fabric piece that shows a repeat, placement or border print onto the final design. This will be printed onto natural linen.

Size 35cm x 108cm. Suitable for a wall hanging, runner or small cushion.

The Process:

Discussing your design and project. Drawing your designs onto paper and cutting stencils. Creating mono prints from painting onto Perspex and printing on to paper.

Printing onto paper first helps to see how your print works. As the amount of ink and pressure changes. An even print works best to create a repeat pattern. Mono prints are created with brushes, scratching and drawing into the ink. Creating bolder and more complex results. Through experimentation you can resolve your prints and ideas. Once confident you can move to printing your fabric design onto the linen.

Materials Students to Bring:

Stencil ideas for motifs: plants, flowers, rocks, shells,

Monoprint ideas: Textures, ripples, scratching. Brush strokes and drawing. Simplicity works best with these techniques.
