By August 1944 there were over 2,000 Japanese prisoners of war being held in Australia, a little over 1,100 of these were held in a prisoner of war camp near Cowra. On 5 August 1944 at about 2:00am several hundred Japanese prisoners set fire to their huts and attacked the perimeter, throwing blankets and jackets over the wire to aid their escape.
