Lane Cove Be Generous for the Grateful

In the Cove is a member of the Lower North Shore Free Stuff and Low Waste Living Facebook Group.  At the start of the year, ITC was decluttering and we posted heaps of items on this site to pass on to someone who needed an item (a trampoline, saxophone, handbags and much more).  It was such a lovely feeling to give items to people who would reuse them.

One of the members of that group posted about an organisation called The Generous and the Grateful.

The Generous and the Grateful collects donations from kind-hearted Australians and gives to those who really need a boost to get back in control of their lives (for example refugees or domestic violence victims).  The good news is that as they are located in Ryde, they will pick up items from Lane Cove homes.

Who is Behind the Generous and the Grateful?

The Generous and The Grateful was founded by Carmen Platt. Carmen was an advocate involved with Mums4Refugees, she realised that there was an urgent need for household items and she went about sourcing those goods through Facebook groups, freecycle, and gumtree.  Her mission was to set up a safe home for someone, so they could rebuild their lives more easily.

In her spare time, Carmen travelled around Sydney with her trusty blue trailer finding used goods from generous people, like sofas, fridges, bunkbeds, TV’s, warm blankets, bicycles, you name it. She then worked with Caseworkers to arrange delivery to those who had nothing; No beds to sleep on, no machine to wash in, no pots to cook in. Nothing.

In mid-2017, after being overwhelmed with support and a desire to also help our environment with less landfill, Carmen found The Generous and the Grateful.

Carmen realised that everyday Australians could really ‘DO something‘ to help those in need. They have used furniture and white goods that they no longer need – because they are having kids and upsizing; retiring and downsizing; moving overseas, renovating or just updating their style.

What Does the Generous and the Grateful Accept?

The good news is that they accept items of household equipment that some other organisations do not accept.  All they ask is that they be in working conditioning and of a standard that you would share with your friends.

Their items list is separated into 3 categories:
Always Take:
  • Fridges
  • Washing Machines
  • Bed Frames
  • Ensembles
  • Double Bed Bases

Currently In Demand:

These donations will be requested when they have a demand for them; follow their Facebook Page to stay up to date on requests. They are normally:

  • Televisions
  • Sofas/Lounges
  • Dining Tables that seat 2-4 people is ideal. No glass tops
  • Microwave
  • Sets of Drawers

We Never Take:

While they would be a lovely addition to a new home, we are focusing on just the essential furniture items. They do not take:

  • Mirrors
  • Baby-related items
  • Glass top dining tables
  • Dryers
  • Linen

    Pick Up Zones
