Local Lane Cove Honey

As most of us know, bees are a critical link in our food chain.  Globally, including in Australia, bee populations are under pressure for a variety of reasons.  The consequences for agriculture are significant.  There is a growing movement of urban beekeepers with beehives appearing in back yards, and even on the top of buildings, across Australia and beyond.

Beekeepers must be licenced, follow good biosecurity practices and abide by local government rules.  For the most part, bees live in harmony with the urban environment.

We have tracked down some Lane Cove Local Beekeepers who are selling Lane Cove Honey.

Greek Streets Honey

Motivated by a desire to learn more about these fascinating, amazing creatures, and to play a small, personal role in supporting the declining bee population, Kim Loane started beekeeping two years ago using hives that allow the honey to be harvested at the ‘turn of tap’ – an Australian innovation known as a Flow Hive (see our cover photo).

Living in the Greek Streets area of Lane Cove, the bees have access to local bushland and urban gardens.  Their honey production rapidly outgrew the consumption of family and friends, and excess honey is offered for sale under the label Greek Streets Honey.

The bees get first to call on their honey as it is their food – and over the winter period, there is little to spare.  In spring, summer, and autumn, the honey flows and varies in flavour and colour depending upon what is in flower in the Lane Cove area at the time.  The variety of colours and flavours is amazing, especially considering the usual consistency offered by commercial honey.

Henley Street Honey Co.

Our bees unexpectedly moved into the wall of our house before we moved them into a hive. Ever since, these sneaky stowaways have definitely earned their keep, pollinating the bountiful gardens of Lane Cove’s western edge and working round the clock to produce the most exquisite honey you might ever taste.

Sourced from three hardworking hives, Henley Street Honey Co. produces a limited run of seasonal honey. Sampling the lusty flavours of the Stringybark Creek gums to the lighter nectars of the suburban flora, our unique honey harvests sell out quickly, so don’t buzz around the bush if you want to grab a jar.

Delicious, pure and raw honey from family-run beehives in Longueville.  The bees access local eucalyptus in the nearby National Parks and the many trees in the leafy lower North Shore of Sydney.

Tambourine Bay Honey

We sell honey made by our bees in Riverview.

Our dad was interested in bees and did a course on natural beekeeping. He then bought a hive and some bees, and we have been eating our honey ever since. The bees make plenty for us, so we thought we could share it with other raw natural honey lovers.

Our first harvest was in Spring 2018. We had so much honey and gave a lot away to family and friends. Then we thought people outside our network would be interested in purchasing local raw honey.

The beehive is in our backyard, and the bees feed on native plants from Tambourine Bay Reserve as well as flowers from our garden. Our dad organises the honey harvest, and he wears the full suit. It is a hard job taking the boxes apart. My sister and I package and sell the honey.

Did you know it needs to be more than 22 degrees Celsius to harvest honey?

We have a Warre Hive. This type of hive is used in Natural Bee Keeping. This type of hive allows the bees to build their own honeycomb, just like they do in nature. It also doesn’t require a lot of maintenance by the beekeeper. We have one hive, and that hive can produce up to eight litres of honey. That’s with leaving some for the bees to sustain themselves through the cooler months. We are selling the honey to raise money for another hive.
