Lane Cove News Week in Review 3rd August to 10th August 2022

Welcome to our Lane Cove News week in review.

Lane Cove Market Square Car Park – Gloomy Lighting

You may have noticed that the lighting in Lane Cove Market Square Car Park has been gloomy. Lane Cove Council has been working on installing new LED lights; once this is finished, the lighting should improve.  There was also an issue with the lighting on the ramps, and Lane Cove Council has advised ITC that this issue has now been fixed.

The new red and green light signalling system has been working, and it is easier to spot a vacant car parking space.

Bus Cancellations

Since Busways took over Route 7 buses (the buses that service the Lane Cove Council Area), there have been complaints of buses being delayed or not turning up.  We have now been made aware of bus timetables being permanently changed – but with no notice to customers.

For example, Bus Route 261 – 12.22 pm and 1.11 pm – City to Lane Cove no longer appear on the timetable.

Have you noticed any permanent timetable changes since Busways took over in January 2022?  Please email us at [email protected] if you have any comments.

Commuters were told there would be no service reduction when bus operators changed.  Read the background information here.

Lane Cove Council Roadworks

Lane Cove Council has advised work will commence widening Tambourine Bay Road from Burns Bay Road to Sera Street in the next two weeks.

Graffiti

Graffiti is popping up again around the Lane Cove area.  This table is at Cunninghams Reach.  If you see Grafitti, you can report it online here.

Garage Sale Success

After three years, the St Michael’s Parish HUGE Garage Sale was held once again on 23 July 2022.   Although it rained all day, it was a huge success.  The organisers posted the following:

“The garage sale team would like to thank Jacky Barker of ITC fame for being our new sponsor and all the people of Lane Cove and surrounding areas for coming along and supporting this event. We managed to raise $12,000 this year. $10,000 goes to Caritas to support their work in Australia and overseas, and the rest goes to Youth off the Streets. It might take a village to raise a child, but it also takes a village to make a garage sale a success. Thank you to everyone who donated goods, baked cakes, came along on the day, donated prizes to the raffle (Baker’s Delight, Welcome Home Help and Infinity Hair), purchased items or helped in any other way.”

Get Ready for More Rain

The Willoughby/Lane Cove SES team posted the following warning:

“The Bureau of Meteorology has declared an adverse Indian Ocean dipole event, increasing the chances of above-average rainfall over much of Australia during the rest of winter and spring.

We encourage residents to make the most of the sunny days to prepare their home for storms – and soak in some vitamin D!

  • Maintain your yard and balcony – tie down furniture and other outdoor items
  • Clean your gutters, down pipes and drains to prevent blockages, so water doesn’t enter your home
  • Trim trees and branches that could potentially fall on your property – remember to check your local council guidelines and seek help from an arborist
  • Fix any damage to your roof such as broken or missing tiles

You can find more information on how to prepare for a storm here.

Lane Cove Events

Save the Date! – Sunday 6 November 2022.  The Food and Wine Festival by The River is back (with a difference).

Lane Cove Council and Mudgee Wine Region are the perfect pairings for North Shore locals looking to enjoy a delicious day out this November.

Coming together for the first time on Sunday 6 November, the brand new partnership will see close to 20 popular regional wine, and food stallholders serving up the best of the region at Tambourine Bay Reserve, Riverview, from 11:00 am – 5:00 pm.

President of Mudgee Wine Association Deborah Clear shares the excitement of coming to Lane Cove: “After a challenging few years for large-scale events, Mudgee Wine Association is thrilled to be partnering with Lane Cove Council to bring a slice of the Mudgee Region to Lane Cove. With some of the region’s best wines, beer and spirits on offer, it’s set to be a fantastic day out.”

When speaking of the announcement Mayor of Lane Cove, Clr Andrew Zbik, says, “What better way to enjoy the Springtime weather than being able to enjoy some of our State’s finest wines in our backyard? I look forward to welcoming Mudgee to the shores of Lane Cove this November”.

Food and Wine by the River is the signature event of the annual Lane Cove Festival by the River, which will run from 1 – 13 November 2022.

Until then, pop the date in the diary as this year’s fresh lineup at Food and Wine by the River will be worth the wait!

The Last Food and Wine Festival by the River was held in 2019 – read more here.  It is part of the River Festival held in November.

Community Engagement Sessions – Trees on Private Land.

Apologies to those residents who turned up at the Lane Cove Plaza and Kingsford Smith Oval to discuss trees with Lane Cove Council on Saturday, 6 August 2022.  Lane Cove Council has to cancel the event due to a COVID19 positive result by one of the participants.  The event has now been rescheduled for 20 August 2022.

These initial drop-in stalls are part of a grant-funded project which aims to identify any barriers or negative perceptions residents may have for trees on private land.

By identifying these issues, Council will gain the necessary tools to develop localised materials for urban heat mitigation and alleviate some residents’ concerns.

It is an interactive process including visual presentation tools aimed to target those who may not always participate in traditional formats such as our surveys.
