Eden Unearthed – Fun For the Whole Family

If you’re looking for something to do with the family in November (or any weekend until April 2023), In The Cove suggests you take a trip to Eden Gardens and view the Eden Unearthed Exhibition.

What is Eden Unearthed?

Eden Unearthed showcases 35 stunning installations in the open-air garden gallery at Macquarie Park.  It’s the largest privately-funded exhibition of its kind in Australia.

Eden Unearthed spans over 2.5 acres, and visitors can fully immerse themselves in the beautiful gardens and be inspired by the artworks. Each artist has an interview linked to a QR code at their work, so you can hear in their own words about the installation. It’s a unique opportunity to learn directly from the artists themselves.

The exhibition is free, but you must register.

Curator Meredith Kirton said the artists selected to participate in this year’s exhibition, set a very high standard of exhibitions and included local and international artists. The successful submissions responded not only to the wonderful gardens and used them as a muse for their works, but also to the sustainability and site responsiveness pillars that the exhibition reflects.

Eden Unearthed Winners

The three Eden Unearthed judges were Allan Giddy, Graham Forsyth and Rae Bolotin.

“The exhibition is particularly important in that it offers participating artists the opportunity to create new work in response to the many varied nooks and crannies of Eden Gardens”, says judge Allan Giddy.

The winner of the Eden Unearthed $10,000 prize was Cloudspace, by Kristy Gordon.

Graham Forsyth, Honorary Associate Professor, UNSW Arts, Design and Architecture, & Eden Unearthed selector and judge, said:

“The winner of this year’s First Prize, Kristy Gordon’s Cloudspace is a work of exceptional beauty and powerful ambition. Set in the very far corner of Eden Garden’s permanent gardens, the work utilises an existing concrete circular enclosure to construct a mesmerising and luminous image of sky/water/wind surrounding a set of interpenetrating shapes.d

Cloudspace both invites and rewards close attention and quiet reflection, and allows us to lose ourselves in a ‘sky’ which doesn’t just sit distantly over us, but which interpenetrates us, moves us, and shows us a depth and complexity to the natural environment and to our experience.

In Cloudspace the inside becomes outside, the still becomes movement and the other becomes ourselves.”
