Lane Cove News Week 18th to 25th October 2023

Welcome to our week in review.

Lane Cove Rocks Out at The Canopy

Last Saturday night, The Canopy was packed with music lovers who enjoyed Kick the INXS tribute band. The lead singer thrilled the crowd by getting off the stage and mingling with the crowd as he sang. He nearly needed security, with some Lane Cove locals getting closer.

One band member was Phil, Unwined Espresso Bar’s barista and a talented musician.

The next big concert at The Canopy is a Queen tribute band. Tickets will be going on sale in November. There will also be a Bluey concert in December.

McDonalds is NOT opening in Lane Cove.

In the Cove has been inundated with emails, phone calls, texts (and smoke signals) with people asking when McDonalds is opening in Lane Cove. This rumour has started due to two things:

  1. A 24/7 drive-thru McDonalds is planned for Chatswood East near Bunnings (expected to open in a year’s time); and
  2. The following photo appeared in The Village Observer’s 30th-anniversary special – Happy Birthday TVO. It was just an example of the type of news they have covered over their 30 years. It shows that people still love reading TVO (and ITC). Read us both, and you will know everything there is to know about Lane Cove.

Lane Cove West Public School is the top-earning school for Hiring Out their Facilities.

An article in the Sydney Morning Herald compared earnings on a school-by-school basis for hiring out their facilities. The article noted:

“Lane Cove West Public School reported $484,659 in income from hiring its facilities to a number of groups including chess and music schools and an out-of-hours school care in 2022, while Killara Public School reported $473,777 from hiring its sports courts and classrooms to businesses including language schools and a tennis club”

You can read the full article here.

Lane Cove Public School disclosed $26 480 in earnings – however, this amount is impacted by the school hall not being available for hire. Greenwich Public School made $26 480. Mowbray Public School made $237 877.

Lane Cove in the News

It’s always interesting to see Lane Cove mentioned in the news. Media Week published an article about Channel 7’s successful Women’s World Cup coverage and how it created a mass cultural movement.

Melissa Hopkins (chief marketing and audience officer, Seven) gave the following example of how a mass cultural movement is created.

“A mass cultural moment is when you end up pulling either a nation together, people become so emotionally invested in an event or environment,” said Hopkins. “But mass cultural experiences also can be smaller because it’s based on the individual. A mass cultural experience can also be the Lane Cove cricket team winning a season. It’s really about where people connect.”

Filming in Longueville

Longueville has become a favourite spot for film productions, and this week, trucks have set up for another round of filming. This must be a local production as production on international films has stopped due to the Hollywood Actors Strike. These trucks are near Kingsford Smith Oval.

Seven Bridges Walk

Last Sunday was the Seven Bridges walk. Central Park Longueville looked very festive, and the scouts held a snag sizzle at Longueville.

Four Frogs Creperie Celebrates 10 Years with Free Crepes

Four Frogs Creperies has been serving crepes and galettes for ten years. ITC used to have to go to Mosman to eat their yummy food, so we were excited when they opened in Lane Cove. On Tuesday, a lineup was outside their Lane Cove store as locals took advantage of their free crepe offer to celebrate ten years. They are also one of the few local shops that sells coffee after 3 p.m.

Car Free Sunday

This week, there was an interesting article in The Guardian about how there should be a more significant push for car-free Sundays and how businesses should be encouraged to use the streets. They did not mention that Lane Cove had already held a car-free Sunday. Read the article here.
