Lane Cove News Week in Review 24th April to 1st May 2024

Welcome to our week in review.

Lane Cove ANZAC Day Service

Once again, Lane Cove residents came out in force to witness the Lane Cove ANZAC Day service in the Canopy presented by the Lane Cove Council and the Lane Cove RSL Sub Branch. The estimated crowd was around 1000 people.

The service featured local service personnel, community groups, sporting clubs and schools.

The service finished with ‘I am Australian’ by the Cameraygal Wind Symphony.

Blackman Park Skateboard Park is Now Open

After the previous skatepark ramp was removed, the Blackman Park Skatepark has been upgraded and reopened. The redesigned skatepark has some more challenging elements and an expanded size.

There is also a shaded area for spectators and lights.

One ITC reader told us that the skatepark is more challenging than the previous skatepark and probably not the place to learn how to skateboard.  He recommended that parents supervise their kids carefully and make them aware of skatepark etiquette.

A new sculpture by artist Carla Gottgens has been installed as part of the redevelopment of the skate facilities at Blackman Park skatepark. It has been created using redundant light poles.

“Orchids” is a modern interpretation of three types of orchids found in the bushland in Lane Cove. It uses lamp heads that resemble the anther cap, column, and stigma of the orchid flower.

Traffic Chaos After a Truck Catches Fire Just Outside the Lane Cove Tunnel

We reported last week that a mobile crane truck caught fire in the Lane Cove Tunnel.

On Wednesday, 24th April 2024, a truck went up in flames just outside the tunnel.

Blackman Park Synthetic Turf Replacement Begins

This week ITC spotted the synthetic turf replacement work at Blackman Park. They are removing the existing turf and the components which were installed in 2014.

The previous surface will be sent for recycling. The new surface will include an organic fill rather than the current rubber fill.

Replacing synthetic turf is not an easy task.  The Daily Telegraph reported this week that The NSW Environment Protection Authority has issued Ku-ring-gai Council with a clean up notice to clean up pollution from the $3.3 million Norman Griffiths Oval upgrade in Pymble in response to sediment laden water observed spilling from the site into Quarry Creek in Lane Cove National Park.

The Daily Telegraph noted:

“The order follows multiple inspections of the site by the EPA officers which observed sediment laden water discharging from a stormwater outlet at the site into the creek.

According to the EPA, the pollution has been traced to recent damage to a sediment basin at the site which has resulted in the “uncontrolled discharge” of water from a damaged pipe.”  Read more here (paywalled).

Bob Campbell Oval Upgrade Works Begin

The Bob Campbell Oval upgrade works have begun.

The initial works will be installing perimeter fencing, tree works, and further site establishment activities.

During the works, access to Bob Campbell Oval from the Gore Creek Reserve bushwalk entries at Flemming Street, River Road, and Ford Street will be restricted.

As various stages of the project are completed, areas will reopen to the public as soon as practical and prior to the oval being available in late 2025.

Hazard Reduction Burning

Smoke from planned hazard reduction burns undertaken by fire agencies across last weekend resulted in a smoke haze settling in areas such as the South Coast, Snowy Monaro, Snowy Valleys, Narrabri, Warrumbungle and Sydney regions.

The NSW Rural Fire Service released the following information:

“These are important controlled burns which will reduce the risk to people and properties from bush fires.

NSW Health reminds people that children, older adults and people with heart and lung conditions are most susceptible to the effects of air pollution and excessive smoke.

If you have asthma or a lung condition, reduce outdoor activities if smoke levels are high and if shortness of breath or coughing develops, take your reliever medicine or seek medical advice.

Asthma sufferers need to follow their Asthma Action Plan and take their relieving medication where necessary. If symptoms get worse, seek medical advice. Further advice is available from the Asthma Foundation website https://asthma.org.au [external link]

Here are some tips to stay safe during hazard reduction burning.

  • Monitor the RFS hazard reduction page for information about planned burns and smoke advisories in your area.
  • Keep doors and windows closed to prevent smoke from entering your home.
  • Remove washing from clotheslines.
  • Ensure pets have a protected area.
  • If you’re driving through a smoky area, slow down, keep your windows up and turn your headlights on.
  • Don’t call Triple Zero just to report that it’s smoky. Save Triple Zero for emergencies.

Hazard Reduction Burning was scheduled to continue until 3 May 2024; however, with the wet weather, the planned reduction burning may need to be postponed.
