Lane Cove News Week in Review 26th June to 3 July 2024

Welcome to our week-in-review.

Transport for NSW Issues List of Bus Changes Due to Metro Launch

This week, Transport for NSW released a list of northwest and north shore bus routes that will either have route changes and timetable changes or just timetable changes when the Chatswood to Sydenham Metro Line opens in August 2024.

ITC published an article listing the specific routes Lane Cove buses route changes. After we published our article on our Facebook page, group page, and Instagram page, the general feedback was that the bus changes would significantly impact Lane Cove commuters and reducing some services would be a step backwards, given the past unreliability of buses in the Lane Cove area.

Some readers commented that the Metro would be quicker and take commuters to more destinations (such as Town Hall and Central).

In the Cove asked Transport for NSW to provide a comment on how the changes will impact Lane Cove, particularly how switching transport modes will impact commuters with mobility issues or parents with prams.

A Transport for NSW Spokesperson said:

“Transport for NSW (Transport) is adjusting bus services to coincide with the opening of the new Metro services to better connect passengers to the public transport network.

Bus services in areas such as The Hills, Ryde, Lane Cove, and North Sydney will be improved to better connect commuters to local amenities and the new Metro. Adjustments to bus timetables and routes in Lane Cove will specifically enhance reliability and increase capacity to meet growing passenger demand.

These changes will result in increased service frequency and extended operating hours on select bus routes, ensuring improved connections to the Sydney Metro. Customers can expect additional weekend services and increased weekly frequency.

Most local bus services in NSW are accessible, providing convenient travel options for customers with limited mobility.

Instead of duplicating metro routes across the bridge and through crowded city streets, we are optimising bus routes to conveniently and efficiently connect people to their local schools, shops, and the Metro.

We are committed to keeping customers informed about the upcoming changes.

Lane Cove Occasional Care Spaces Available

Lane Cove Occasional Care is very popular and rarely has spaces available.

Lane Cove Occasional Care is accepting new enrolments! Many of you with little ones know that LCOCC is usually hard to get into as it has a fantastic reputation of being a small not-for-profit centre (37 children max a day). They are also run by a parent committee, which is even more impressive.

The name may be deceiving, as they offer occasional bookings, but most children attending the centre are Regular bookings with set days. Since it has the option for occasional care, it’s easy to book extra days if needed.

Also, they have something called Regular Occasional Care, a booking that offers the security of a permanent position with the added benefit of holiday leave. If you provide two weeks’ notice, holidays away will not be charged, and you will not lose your child’s place at the centre.

If you are looking for a child care centre, contact LCOCC now; they rarely have immediate openings!

Contact the team today to pop in for a visit.

Social Cohesion Funding

The NSW Government has announced $700,000 in two social cohesion initiatives designed to support local communities in NSW.

The first initiative is the ‘Safeguarding Social Cohesion’ workshops, which will be delivered in partnership with local councils and community leaders. These free workshops will be offered to community workers to provide training on supporting their communities during emergencies and collective trauma events. The workshops will provide participants with practical skills in crisis communication and best practice psychosocial support for their communities.

The second initiative is the delivery of new projects under the NSW Social Cohesion Grants for Local Government program. In its third round, the grants program has awarded seven NSW councils up to $110,000 to deliver programs aimed at improving social cohesion in their local areas.

The Lane Cove Council was awarded $78,000 for ‘Weaving Climate Stories’, a program that brings together youth and seniors to increase connection and a sense of belonging while learning about climate change, leadership, and storytelling.  Click here to learn how to become involved in the Weaving Climate Stories programme.

La Voce Community Choir Winter Concert

On Tuesday, 2 July 2024, La Voce Community Choir held their Winter Concert at the Lane Cove Living and Learning Centre.  Nearly 30 choir members had fun singing in front of a responsive audience.

After the concert, the choir and audience enjoyed nibbles and drinks while conversations occurred. Committee member Gail Neeson was the concert MC. Bianca Zatz, who has performed this vital for a couple of years, was their accompanist.

The La Voce Choir was established 11 years ago, and it is forging ahead. They welcome anyone who wants to come and sing. No one has to audition or sing alone, and they choose their songs democratically. The songs they sing are suggested and voted on by the whole choir.

Sarah de Jong is the choir director, and she co-founded the choir with Cate Sinclair.

In Conversation with Max Hitchins

Max Hitchens has released what is considered to be a world first where he has included QR codes in his book Chasing Gold.  On Monday Night,  the Lane Cove Library hosted an In Conversation with Max Hitchins and ITC.   One of the most enthusiastic audience members was Lane Cove local Aaron who loved hearing stories about fascinating sports people chasing gold.  You can read more about Max and his book here.

The Lane Cove Toy Library has opened its doors to the public, and the response was amazing.

The toy library is for ages 0 to 18 and includes board games or other items that families can enjoy and try before they buy.

Check out the vast range of toys, games and puzzles here.

Councillor Andrew Zbik and his family were the first customers through the door.  The Toy Library was one of the first projects Andrew championed when he was first elected.

The Lane Cove Toy Library is open for click-and-collect on Thursdays between  9.30 am and 12.00 pm and Saturdays between 9.30 am and 12.00 pm.    If you want to recycle blister packs or bread tags, drop them off (see our cover photo).   You can also recycle blister packs at the Lane Cove Council buidling.

Previously, you could recycle blister packs with Recyclesmart, but the current doorstep recycling provider HomeCycle does not – read more about HomeCycle here.

The food dehydrator is one of the most frequently borrowed items at both The Sydney Library of Things branches.  Last week a TSLOT member Rachel delivered some stunning dehydrated blood oranges as a gift for the volunteers.

Have Your Say on Lane Cove Council’s Age-Friendly Strategy

Lane Cove Council are seeking feedback from the local community on the Draft Age-Friendly Lane Cove Strategy 2024 – 2029. The draft strategy was developed in partnership with Redwoods Working Collaborative, which helped gather feedback from the community from April to June of this year.
