Lane Cove News Week in Review 30th October to 6th November 2024

Welcome to our week in review.

Lane Cove Food & Wine By The River

On Sunday, November 3rd, 2024, many locals head to Burns Bay Reserve to enjoy the annual Lane Cove Food & Wine By The River event. The event is a perfectly paired project between Lane Cove Council and Mudgee Wineshowcasing Mudgee’s wine and beer producers and some delectable treats.

Some local food and beverage suppliers were also in attendance, reminding visitors what’s in our backyard.

Attendees enjoyed the beautiful setting at Burns Bay while listening to music, getting their faces painted, playing lawn games, relaxing, and, of course, sampling all the produce on offer. You can read our wrap-up here.

    Greenwich Village Arts Trail

The annual Greenwich Arts Trail took place over the weekend of 2-3 November. The event showcased the work of almost 30 artists living and working in the suburb. It provided a wonderful opportunity for visitors to see where and how the art is made as they enjoyed making their way around the beautiful suburb of Greenwich.

As previously reported, Greenwich Library was recently reopened after a quick refresh.

    Remembrance Day Service 2024.

Monday, 11 November 2024, is Remembrance Day.

The Lane Cove RSL Sub Branch and Lane Cove Council invite you to commemorate Remembrance Day with a service in The Lane Cove Plaza at 10:30 a.m. to pay tribute to and remember all those who sacrificed their lives in service to their country.  Each year, the Lane Cove RSL sub-branch invites a Lane Cove local to share their relative’s story.  Read last year’s presentation here.

Lane Cove honours those locals who lost their lives in World War I with an Honour Roll at the Lane Cove Council Civic Centre.

VOTE NOW – Is Lane Cove Plaza NSW’s Favourite Urban Space?

The Urban Design Association NSW is running a fun poll to celebrate the everyday places you love—where you shop, eat, relax, and connect.

This year’s Favorite Urban Place poll theme is pedestrian city streets, and the Lane Cove Plaza section of Burns Bay Road is on the shortlist! The area was noted for providing cafe, restaurant, and shopping options, a connection to nature with the big trees, and open space to sit, connect, and play.

Hurry – voting closes on Sunday 10 November

Protect Our Posties From Your Pooches

Australia Post is calling on local councils to adopt stricter measures in response to the alarming number of dog-related incidents involving Posties. New data has revealed more than 49 Posties a week have fallen victim to dog-related incidents in the past six months – an average of ten per day – with fears these numbers will continue to rise in the lead-up to the holiday season.

Australia Post General Manager of Safety and Wellb Rod Maule stressed the importance of two key components of keeping Posties safe: dog owners taking responsibility for their behaviour and councils implementing stronger measures to prevent dog attacks, including increased monitoring and enforcement of animal management laws.

“Dog attacks remain one of the highest safety concerns for our people. As we head into peak season and delivery volumes increase, there is a serious concern for our Posties’ physical and mental well-being, particularly around dogs.

“Aggressive or dangerous dogs are reported to council and local rangers, however too often we see risks are not properly mitigated. This usually leads to multiple instances of the same dog repeating aggressive behaviour, which can result in a severe attack on our Postie.

“As the holiday season approaches, dog owners must be mindful that all visitors, including Posties, should have safe access to the front door without being stopped by a dog. Dog ownership comes with responsibilities, and we need council support to effectively enforce laws and regulations to ensure the safety of our people,” Mr Maule continued.

Sydney Marathon is now a World Major Marathon

Lane Cove loves to run – we have a very successful, fun run!

However, the more serious athletes among us may be excited to learn that Sydney is taking its place among the iconic marathon cities of the world, becoming just the seventh Abbott World Marathon Major alongside New York, London, Tokyo, Boston, Chicago and Berlin.

The TCS Sydney Marathon will take place on August 31, 2025, and will be the first time the Sydney Marathon is classed as an Abbott World Marathon. The 2024 Sydney marathon in September saw more than 20,000 runners finish the race.

The elevation of the Sydney Marathon to major status has been made possible through funding and strategic partnership with the NSW Government through Destination NSW.

This new status is expected to inject up to $73 million into the NSW economy through visitor spending over the next three years.

If you want to start training for next year’s marathon, coach  Andy Smith from North Shore Running and Outdoor Fitness has compiled a list of local hill runs.  Read more here.

National Whooping Cough Day – Stay Up To Date. Vaccinate.

November 8  2024 is National Whooping Cough Day, an initiative of the Immunisation Foundation of Australia.

The day aims to raise awareness about the importance of keeping up to date with whooping cough vaccinations. Whooping cough is particularly dangerous for infants, but it is easily contracted and spread by people of all ages.

Whooping cough is a severe respiratory infection at any age. 2024 has seen high infection rates of the disease across NSW.

It is recommended that adults receive a booster immunisation every 10 years, and pregnant women should have one during each pregnancy.
