This year, Australia Day falls on a Sunday. All the activities below (unless otherwise stated are on Australia Day, January 26 2024).
In 2023, The National Australia Day Council noted:
“For some, Australia Day is a day to celebrate all the opportunities provided by living in a free, multicultural society. For others, it’s a chance to reflect on their own citizenship and what it means to be Australian. And for many, January 26 represents a day of sadness, mourning and reminder of colonisation.”
Australia Day Lane Cove Shops, Cafes, and Restaurants
Woolworths, Coles and Harris Farm will open on the Australia Day Public Holiday. We will publish a list of coffee shops and other open locations on the public holiday very soon.
Start your Australia Day at The Canopy as Lane Cove Council welcomes Lane Cove’s newest citizens in this special Citizenship Ceremony from 8:00 am. There will be special guest speakers, and this year, the Lane Cove’s Australia Day Ambassador is Mr Nicholas Gleeson Adventurer / Motivational Speaker / Paralympian – Athletics.
Who is Nicholas Gleeson?
Nick’s life changed forever at age seven when an electronic swinging supermarket door hit him on the side of his head, causing a retinal detachment. With the support of his family and friends, Nick continually challenged himself to first attend university, and then go on to live a life of sport and adventure.
Nick’s accomplishments include representing Australia at the Paralympic Games, crossing the finish line in the New York City Marathon three times, racing up the 1,576 steps of the Empire State Building and completing the gruelling 90km from Durban to Pietermaritzburg in the Comrades Marathon. Nick also represented his state and country in blind cricket for almost 20 seasons, using an audible ball in the game. Nick was also chosen to carry the Olympic Torch for the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.
Nick’s later life moved towards adventure expeditions. Nick put together a group named Blind Ambition to climb Africa’s highest mountain, four members of the expedition reached the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro.
