Wendy Middleton talks about why she believes a food diary is a good idea. Take it away Wendy….
Once or twice a year I’ll record what I’m eating for three days in a food diary app. I find it really useful to identify where I’ve gone a bit off track and it motivates me to get back on track!
I also use it to work out if I could benefit from a supplement and how much. A good example is calcium. Calcium is essential for general health, not just our bones, but supplementing unnecessarily is not a good idea. (You can read more on calcium here Are You Getting Enough Calcium?)
Three Reasons to Try a Food Diary
Here are three reasons you might like to consider using a food diary app:
- To identify nutrient shortfalls and excesses. Are you meeting protein targets? Is there too much saturated fat in your diet? Do your meals contain adequate fibre?
- Use it as an education tool to become familiar with nutrients in foods. By recording your food intake, you become familiar with the sources and amounts of nutrients in individual foods. E.g. did you know oranges contain calcium?
- Provides a way to measure your dietary changes. After identifying the changes you’d like to make, start implementing them. Then, revisit the food diary in a few months to track your progress.
Wendy’s Food Diary App of Choice
Cronometer is my food app of choice and the one I recommend to my clients. This app records macronutrients as well as vitamins and minerals, which not all food diaries do. The data is accurate and comprehensive. You can download reports, which make working with a nutritionist very effective.
A food diary isn’t for everyone. Nor is it about perfection. It’s about awareness and education.
So what do you think? Will you try a food diary?
