Welcome to our Lane Cove News Week In Review.
Scott Bennison Joins One Nation
At the last Lane Cove Council election, Scott Bennison ran as an independent for council. He had previously been a Liberal councillor. He failed to gain pre-selection, and this, in fact, worked out for him, as the endorsed Liberal candidate was one of the candidates whose nomination forms the NSW State Office failed to lodge before the electoral commission deadline.
Last week, the post below was posted on Facebook. ITC has phoned and texted Mr Bennison for a comment but he has not returned our calls.

Federal Minister For Climate Change & Energy Tours Lane Cove Aquatic & Leisure Centre
As reported last week Lane Cove Council (LCC) has received a $1.14 million grant from the Federal Government’s Community Energy Upgrades Fund to transform the Lane Cove Aquatic Leisure Centre from gas to electricity.
On Friday, 14th November 2025, the Honourable Chris Bowen MP, Federal Minister for Climate Change and Energy, joined Member for Bennelong Jerome Laxale and Lane Cove Mayor Merri Southwood at the centre for a tour of the facilities that will benefit from the funding.
The significant investment will replace the centre’s gas systems with modern, energy-efficient electric alternatives — cutting emissions, reducing running costs, and helping Lane Cove take a substantial step toward a greener future.
LCC General Manager Louise Kerr, Lane Cove Swim Club ‘s Josh Baker and representatives from centre operators Blue Fit were also on hand to discuss the impact the funding will have on their operations.
According to the Council, the project is expected to cut annual energy bills by $130,000–$270,000, reduce total energy usage by 2.9 million kWh per year, and cut carbon emissions by 433-740 tonnes of CO₂-e annually.

Lantern Loch Ness Returns To Local Waters
On Friday, 14th November, Currambena Primary School and Preschool’s Lantern Loch Ness monster returned to the water as part of the 2025 Festival By The River. Her previous outing was at Tambourine Bay in June. This time she explored the more open waters at Manns Point Greenwich.
After a slightly windy afternoon, the Currambena team made sure all was in order, and with the help of a couple of energetic kayakers, Nessie headed out for a harbour splash. Onlookers were delighted to see Nessie glowing against the Sydney skyline. No doubt there were also some confused ferry passengers as they passed by!
Locals who had gathered at Mann’s Point to watch the spectacle enjoyed their picnics by lantern lights along with a spot of tree climbing and exploring the boulders around the reserve, which is home to Greenwich Sailing Club.
It took three weeks to create the monster, with students designing, constructing, painting, and assembling their lantern sculptures using cane, paper, and candlelight. For her second outing, there was a fresh coat of paint and fairy lights installed.
We hope this is not the last time we see Nessie in Lane Cove waters!

Handmade paintings, artwork, jewellery, delicious baked goods and beautifully propagated plants lined the Canopy. Some stallholders even designed clever games where visitors could play for a chance to win a prize.
Live music and on-stage interviews added to the atmosphere and showcased kids who are already doing amazing things in the community.
The event was run by Tara Events and proudly supported by Lane Cove Council.

If You Buy Us A Coffee, it is, in fact, helping to pay the ITC Team
We want to clarify that, yes, the ITC team does support local businesses by drinking coffee, but there is a limit to the number of cups you can drink in a day.
We started the Buy Us A Coffee Campaign as a way to keep local news free and to grow our team. Our team is now comprised of three local mums who work part-time to bring you all the up-to-date news, traffic alerts, incidents, and events. We also now have Walkley Award Nominee Jack Kelly writing articles for us, as well as founder Jacky Barker. We truly appreciate any help you can provide, whether large or small.
How local journalism keeps communities engaged
Local newsrooms play a vital role in keeping communities informed and engaged with the decisions that affect them. Without dedicated coverage of local government, infrastructure, and policy changes, many residents are left uninformed about issues that significantly impact their daily lives. Independent newsrooms help bridge this gap, providing a trusted source of information and giving people a platform to voice concerns. Strong local reporting doesn’t just inform, it fosters public participation and strengthens civic engagement. – extract from the Local and Independent News Association Website
