The key local stories, announcements and updates affecting our community this week.

Lane Cove Council Extraordinary General Meeting 2 February 2026 – Invitation List for the Galuwa Recreation Centre Official Opening

A notice of motion proposed by Councillor David Roenfeldt and seconded by Councillor Scott Bennison was tabled at the Lane Cove Council EGM seeking formal recognition of the long-term civic and executive leadership behind the Galuwa Recreation Centre.  The project has been 15 years in the making.

The motion proposed acknowledging the contributions of former Mayors Pam Palmer, Andrew Zbik and Scott Bennison, former General Manager Craig Wrightson, and former Councillors who served during those mayoral terms, and inviting them to attend the Centre’s official opening on 6 February 2026.

Councillors Roenfeldt and Bennison spoke in favour of the motion, saying it was a long-standing tradition to invite former Councillors and staff to council events, and noted that former Councillor Daniel Strassbourg had been invited to the opening of the Lane Cove Skate park.

Councillor Bennsion said there was no policy on who should be invited to events, but there was an informal understanding that former councillors should be recognised for their work and their public service.

Mayor Merri Southwood spoke against the motion, saying that in her term as Mayor, she has never been involved in compiling guest lists for council events and that it is an operational matter for the General Manager.

Councillor Southwood said the guest list was prepared in December 2025 by council staff and was shown to her by the General Manager on her way to the Mayoral Memorial Service at Bondi.  The only changes discussed with the General Manager were the removal of NSWROC general managers and the elimination of some duplicate names.

Due to budget constraints, the guest list was limited.  The Mayor noted that the opening event is an opportunity to thank the external project team, show Lane Cove sporting groups the centre, and acknowledge funding from the NSW State Government.

The motion was defeated, with Councillors Bennison (One Nation) and Roenfeldt (ALP) voting in favour, Councillors Southwood (ind), Bryla (ind), Flood (ind), Greenwell (ind) and Kennedy (ind) voting against, and Councillors Little (ALP) and Taylor (ind) abstaining.

You can watch the webcast of the EGM here.
