Get Involved in Clean Up Australia Day 2026

Clean Up Australia Day is on Sunday, 1 March this year.

Clean Up Australia Day organisers are calling on individuals, families, schools, and community groups across the country to register now and get in on the action to be part of Australia’s largest environmental movement.

Since its inception, over 23 million volunteers have joined the Clean Up effort.

Clean Up Australia Day 2025 was the largest Clean Up ever, with over 800,000 volunteers taking part during the campaign period.

Pip Kiernan, Chair of Clean Up Australia said: “Our nation’s litter disposal and recycling challenges are continuously shifting but the one thing we know for certain, is that too much litter is still making its way into our streets, parks, bushlands and waterways.”

Clean Up Australia’s Litter Report FY25 reveals that plastics remain the dominant litter type on our streets and in natural areas, accounting for 80.8% of all counted litter.

The figure highlights the immense challenge we face with plastic waste, which finds its way into the Australian marine and land environment at a rate of 250 kilograms per minute.

The Litter Report also highlights that the number one item collected at Clean Up events in 2025 was cigarette butts, accounting for 23.6% of all counted litter.

Cigarette butts are made of a plastic called cellulose acetate. When littered in the environment, they shed microfibres, leach toxic waste and take up to 30 years to decompose.

Other troubling trends revealed within the report include the ongoing problem of soft plastics, which, as a category, account for 30.5% of all litter reported.

Packaging remains a persistent challenge, accounting for 59.5% of all reported litter during the year.

Every Lane Cove resident can get involved by registering to help at a Clean Up event.

If you can’t attend an organised event, grab a bag and some gloves and take the family for a walk along your street.

It is also not too late for your street to organise a Clean Up Australia event, and if you do, we would love you to send us photos we can feature on In the Cove.

Clean Up Australia Day is the perfect day to get you and the kids involved in an activity for the greater good.

Lane Cove has a proud tradition of participating in  Clean Up Australia Day.

Volunteers have cleaned up Batten Reserve Bushland and the surrounding streets for many years.  The Stringybark Creek Residents Association hosts the event.

Young and old join forces in a massive clean-up. Families and residents of all ages, from 2 years through to over 80, take part, as do the enthusiastic and very helpful Lane Cove Guides.  You can also get involved and grab a snag #winwin.

The Stringybark Creek Residents Association invites anyone from the Lane Cove area to help remove rubbish from the bushland around Stringybark Creek.  Read more here about the type of rubbish they have picked up over the years.

SBCRA has run this event every year since Clean Up Australia Day began.

It’s well organised, and the event has become a tradition among many of their volunteers.

There is a sausage sizzle at the end for participants.  It starts at 8 am, and you can register or just turn up on the day.

The Meeting place is the same as last year, park at the western end of Johnston Crescent, just opposite 66 Johnstone Crescent, Lane Cove.
