Lane Cove River Rates Poorly On Microplastic Contamination
An Australian-first microplastic assessment reviewed 120 coastal waterways in NSW to evaluate levels of microplastics present in these environments. Tested areas were rated on a scale A to E with an A rating recording Very Low contamination levels and E recording Very High contamination levels.
It found the Cooks River, Dee Why Lagoon, Muddy Creek and upper Parramatta River are NSW’s most contaminated coastal waterways all scoring an E.
Lane Cove River scored a D and was one of the waterways that was identified as having artificial turf fragments in the water. Blackman Park, which has an artificial oval, is located near the Lane Cove River.
The report noted:
“In the current study, artificial turf fragments were present in 17% of the waterways surveyed and comprised 5% of all microplastics. This supports growing evidence that artificial turf contributes significantly to plastic pollution in the environment, in addition to its other known environmental impacts such as chemical leaching, climate change implications, and biodiversity loss (de Haan et al., 2023)”
The report only includes data up to Jan 2024. In March 2024, Lane Cove Council started replacing the artificial turf. At the time, the Lane Cove Council noted:
“The existing surface will be sent for recycling while the new surface will include an organic fill rather than the current rubber fill.”
ITC has asked the EPA if it has data after Jan 2024, as it would be interesting to see if the level of microplastics has dropped after the Blackman Park upgrade.
More information on the EPA report scope and findings here.

Car Boot Sale Benefits Stallholders & Shoppers Alike
On Sunday, 15 March 2026, Lane Cove Rotary held one of its popular Car Boot Sales.
Around 35 stallholders arrived with a bootload of items each that they no longer needed or wanted, hoping to make some money from them. Shoppers were greeted with an array of clothing, footwear, accessories, toys, bric-a-brac and more as they hoped to find treasure and rescue items from potentially ending up in landfill.
Of course, there was the obligatory sausage sizzle to keep everyone well fed and watered throughout the event.
Lane Cove Rotary is hoping to host another car boot sale mid-year.
Thank you to Lane Cove Rotary and, in particular, John Palmer for the images.

Lane Cove Local Kylie Bryden Smith Meets Tongan Royalty
Lane Cove Local Kylie Bryden-Smith is Chair of the MLC School Board, and she is currently in Tonga celebrating the Queen Salote College’s 100-year anniversary celebrations.
MLC School works alongside Queen Salote College to support learning and teaching practices, including the development of programs aligned with the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA). This collaborative approach builds sustainable educational capacity while fostering shared learning between educators across both school communities.
The partnership also supports the development of global citizenship and leadership through service and shared responsibility.
Kylie told ITC that 2,000 people were singing the most amazing harmonies at the church service, including 1,000 “Old Girls” who all wore the school’s royal blue.
It was followed by lunch on the palace grounds with the King and Queen of Tonga, the Tongan Prime Minister, many ambassadors, and the heads of all the Churches.

Bus News and Bus Stop Closures
Last week, the NSW Government announced that more Bendy Buses had arrived.
We asked Busways (the operator that runs the Region 7 Lane Cove area) how many of the Bendy Buses would be allocated to Region 7.
A Busways spokesperson told ITC:
“The first of 13 new articulated “bendy” buses for Sydney’s North Shore and West have arrived in Region 7 at Busways’ Ryde Depot, part of Transport for NSW’s rollout of 50 high‑capacity buses across the network.
In addition, 22 previously out‑of‑service articulated buses have returned to Region 7 following complex repairs.
These extra vehicles boost capacity on key routes and double Region 7’s articulated fleet to 60 across the Willoughby and Ryde depots. The expanded fleet will also support the extension of the 500X service in the coming months, restoring a direct link between Ryde and Parramatta CBD.
To meet increasing demand, Busways is recruiting around 50 additional drivers across the region. More information is available here.
From Monday, 16 March, the following bus stops have been permanently closed:
- Fullers Rd at Sylvia St (205748) in Chatswood
- Burns Bay Rd at Garthowen Ave (206650) in Lane Cove
- Epping Rd after Fraser St (2066247) in Lane Cove North

New Pop Up At The Diddy
A telecommunications tower has popped up at The Diddy on River Road.
This is the case of the revolving tower. A tower used to be at 4 Northwood Road, it then moved to 266 Longueville Road and then to next to Jack and Co on Northwood Road. The block next to Jack and Co is being redeveloped into a car wash, so the tower had to be removed. This is a temporary tower while Telstra, Optus and Vodafone find a new space, which they envisage will be by Feb 2027.
Longueville and Riverview residents have complained about poor Telstra reception, and ITC wrote to Telstra in 2025 to find out why. At the time, we were told that they had plans, but we have heard nothing more.
A Telstra spokesperson said in March 2025:
“Telstra invests more than any other telco in Australia, with our mobile network now covering 99.7% of the Australian population over an area of 3 million square kilometres, which is more than 1 million square kilometres greater than our nearest competitor.
A number of environmental factors can affect mobile coverage. This includes the type of device being used, the distance from a tower, terrain (hills and valleys), the urban density, presence of intervening vegetation or buildings, and the types of materials used in buildings that signal needs to pass through, to name just a few.
The changing urban landscape in and around Lane Cove can affect our coverage in some parts at the moment. We have plans in the pipeline to move our existing site to a new spot, which should improve coverage for customers.
Residents can improve their mobile coverage by using their nbn connection to access Wi-Fi calling. This is a free setting on most popular mobile phones and allows your mobile to use a Wi-Fi network to make and receive mobile calls.
We also encourage business owners to talk to their bank about connecting their EFTPOS terminals to their nbn or Wi-Fi connection to prevent delays in processing transactions.”
ITC has chased up Telstra for more information on numerous occasions, and ironically, you can’t reach the media centre by phone

On Thursday 12 March 2026 there was a short piece on a proposed residential development in Longueville by known real estate enthusiast Owen Chen. Separated Cycleways
Councillors Flood and Bryla have tabled a notice of motion asking Lane Cove Council to improve street design to better support walking and cycling, especially in Lane Cove village.
One of the action items they are asking for is recognising that separated cycleways are the safest option for cyclists and pedestrians.
When ITC was researching our article on the new blue lines appearing on footpaths throughout Lane Cove, we spoke to experts who said the only safe option was separated cycleways.

Food Waste Collections Commence

Monday, 16 March saw the first collections of food waste from Lane Cove residents (some eager locals had them out last week, too).Households with the new maroon-lidded food waste bins can put them out for collection every week along with their red bins. This new service aims to reduce the amount of food waste going to landfill by turning it into useful compost products.
The alternating fortnightly collections of blue, yellow and green lidded bins continue as usual.
Lane Cove Council also shared a few quick tips following some questions about maggots or bugs in the caddy, particularly with the recent warm and wet weather:
- Keep meat and dairy scraps in the fridge or freezer until bin night
- Drain excess liquid from food waste
- Keep the caddy lid closed and store it in a cool place
- Clean the caddy regularly with warm water and soap
- You can spray the inside with vinegar or eucalyptus/tea tree oil as a natural deterrent
Read more about the new service here.
Gore Creek Bush Track Closures
Gore Creek bush tracks are currently closed due to sewer upgrade works and will remain closed for six weeks. There is no access to the walking tracks from River Road, Bob Campbell Oval or Fleming St East until works are completed. It’s estimated they will reopen mid-April (weather-dependent).
Luckily, we are not short of bushwalking options in the Lane Cove Area. Check out some of the options here if you’re looking for an alternative location during the work.

Confusion Over Sunday Buses in Riverview
Lane Cove Council sent a letter to Riverview residents stating that Busways would commence Sunday services through Riverview, and that parking arrangements would therefore have to change. Bus route 253 does not currently run a loop through Riverview on Sundays.
ITC was advised about a change.org petition calling on the council to stop Busways operating in Riverview seven days a week.
ITC asked Lane Cove Council for more information, as we could not find any announcement from Transport for NSW or Busways regarding changes to the 253 route.
One of the issues was installing no-parking on Miramont Street in Riverview on Sundays to make way for buses.
Lane Cove Council advised ITC that they have updated their consultation regarding the proposed parking changes on Miramont Avenue following new information from Busways.
Residents were initially consulted on 24 February 2026 about extending the existing No Parking 7 am –7 pm, Monday to Saturday restriction to include Sundays, based on advice that bus services would operate along Miramont Avenue on Sundays.
Busways has since confirmed that Miramont Avenue will not be included in its updated Sunday bus timetable. However, the bus operator has advised that buses continue to experience manoeuvrability issues along the street due to parked vehicles, which reduce the available carriageway width.
Given the constrained road width, buses are often required to encroach into the opposing lane when vehicles are parked within the restricted section. Busways has therefore formally requested that Council consider installing No Stopping zones to maintain adequate clearance for safe and efficient bus operations.
Council has also received feedback from residents during the initial consultation supporting Sunday restrictions to improve traffic flow and safety during school events.
In response to the updated information and community feedback, Council is now consulting on two revised options for the southern side of Miramont Avenue between No. 6 and Tambourine Bay Road:
Option 1: No Stopping, 6:00 am–8:00 pm, Monday to Saturday.
Option 2: No Stopping, 6:00 am–8:00 pm, Monday to Saturday, and No Parking, 8:00 am–5:00 pm on Sundays.
The proposed changes aim to improve bus manoeuvrability, reduce congestion, and enhance safety for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists.
Council is also working with St Ignatius’ College to develop a Traffic Management Plan for school events to minimise traffic and parking impacts on residents.
Residents are encouraged to review the updated proposal and provide feedback during the current consultation.
You can review the consultation information here.

Chatswood Chase Implementing Ticketless Parking
Chatswood Chase has been undergoing a lengthy refurbishment in recent years, which has included changes to the look and feel of the centre as well as expanded dining options.
The next major change to the centre is the introduction of a ticketless parking system. The system is coming soon, and unlike other ticketless systems, they are encouraging users to register their vehicles and an authorised payment method before coming to the centre.
According to the FAQs for the new system, “Vehicles that are not registered may experience delays at exit and will need to follow payment instructions on-site. However, if you have not registered, you can still pay on exit from the car park.”
It is hoped that the new system will improve traffic flow in and out of the shopping centre. Centre Management is encouraging the use of Malvern Avenue and Archer Street entries for the most streamlined experience.
The centre will still offer 3 hours of free parking for shoppers. Find out more about the changes here.

Monarch of The River
We recently reached out to Greenwich Sailing Club (GSC) to learn more about The Monarch of the River event after seeing a post from them about racing on Saturday 7 March 2026. Colin Duff-Tytler provided such a comprehensive overview that we will be bringing it to you in an article shortly. For now, here is a little about the event and racing on 7 March.
The format of the Monarch of the River is that each club takes a turn to host the event at their club, using their unique courses. In 2026 there were 5 races across 3 days spread over the season. The events were hosted as follows by Greenwich Sailing Club (2 races), Hunters Hill Sailing Club (2 races) and Lane Cove 12ft Skiff Sailing Club (one very long race).

The final day of racing for the 2026 event took place on Saturday 7 March. This inter-club event for the ILCA (formerly ‘Laser’) class of boats was hosted by Lane Cove 12ft Skiff Sailing Club which is based in Longueville.
39 participants across the event came from five clubs: Greenwich Sailing Club, Hunters Hill Sailing Club, Lane Cove Sailing Club, Greenwich Flying Squadron, and, for the first time, Drummoyne Sailing Club.
GSC fielded 6 participants in an overall fleet of 39 boats. It was a good day out for the club with Michael Kwan from GSC taking 1st place on the day. Kerryn Smith from GSC also took out the overall 1st place for the series for the ILCA7 sub-class.

Police issue warning over stealing and fraud offences targeting the elderly
This warning was issued for police commands in incidents reported in the Newcastle City Police District, Kuring-gai Police Area Command, Northern Beaches Police Area Command, The Hills Police Area Command, and Hawkesbury Police Area Command. So although it does not appear to be an issue on the north shore, it is still worth noting the warning.
Police are warning the public about theft and fraud offences targeting the elderly community.
Officers across several Police Area Commands have received reports of the incidents, with some victims reporting losses of hundreds of dollars.
Investigators have been told that elderly victims have been approached by unknown people who claim the victims dropped their wallets or cash. While the victim is distracted, their wallet is taken, and their cards are subsequently used fraudulently.
An incident of note occurred about 4 pm on Monday, 9 March 2026, at a shopping centre car park on Minmi Road, Fletcher.
Officers from Newcastle City Police District were told an 81-year-old man was approached by an unknown man as he entered his vehicle. The unknown man claimed the elderly man had dropped money, and he wanted to return it.
The unknown man forced his way into the vehicle, and the 81-year-old was able to push him out. The unknown man then left the area.
The 81-year-old discovered his bank card was missing and was later used at a service station in Elermore Vale, where $800 was withdrawn.
As inquiries continue, investigators are urging anyone who may have been a victim of a similar incident to report the matter to their local police station or via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
