Locals & Visitors Jump Into Action After Bus Catches Fire Outside The Diddy
A dramatic scene unfolded around 7 pm Saturday 30 May when a Route 261 bus caught fire on River Road West outside The Diddy. The bus sustained significant damage, with eyewitnesses reporting loud explosions and flames visible from surrounding streets.
Quick-thinking locals grabbed fire extinguishers from the venue and attempted to douse the blaze before emergency services arrived. Two fire trucks attended the scene, extinguishing the fire before the burnt-out bus was towed just before 9 pm. The driver safely evacuated four passengers and no injuries were reported. The cause of the fire has not yet been confirmed.

Ombudsman: Council Failed In Its Obligations To 1–5 Pottery Lane
A damning NSW Ombudsman report has found Lane Cove Council’s conduct over fire safety obligations at 1–5 Pottery Lane was unreasonable, contrary to law and amounted to maladministration.
The building was co-developed by Council, largely owned by Council and regulated by Council.
The Ombudsman found Council failed to provide annual fire safety statements for the lots it owned from 2018 to 2025, while also issuing overdue notices to residential owners in the same building.
Council has accepted the findings.
Crows Nest Childcare Centre Facing Closure
A community-run childcare centre that has served Lower North Shore families for nearly 40 years is facing closure. Kelly’s Place Children’s Centre, on the corner of Hume and Clarke Streets in Crows Nest, will close in December 2026 to make way for the NSW Government and North Sydney Council’s Hume Street Park expansion. ITC understands no relocation support has been offered to the centre.
Kelly’s Place is a not-for-profit centre that consistently exceeds national quality standards. The centre is hoping to find a solution that allows both the park and the centre to coexist.
ITC is following this story – if you are an affected family or have information to share, please contact us here.

A New Chapter for Central Park – The Next Tree is Planted
A lovely full-circle moment for Longueville locals this week. One of our roving reporters has spotted a new Angophora tree now planted at Central Park, Longueville — marking the beginning of a new generation after the much-loved tree sculpture was removed last month. The sculpture was created from branches of the original historic Angophora that stood in the park for more than a century before being removed in 2019.
For many locals, this little park has carried a lot of memory of the original tree, the sculpture that followed, and now a living replacement to grow into the next chapter. Have you spotted the new tree yet? Read the original story here.

Lane Cove Council has installed 20 new Return & Earn bin baskets on public bins across the local area. The wire baskets attach to existing public bins and allow anyone to leave their empty eligible bottles, cans and cartons – which can then be collected by residents, kids raising pocket money, or community groups and taken to a Return & Earn depot for the 10c refund. Keep an eye out for them at parks, playgrounds and high-traffic spots around Lane Cove. Full details on the Council website.

Council Transparency Measures Wound Back by Upper House Vote
A NSW Upper House vote last week has unwound transparency protections that governed how local councils can conduct closed meetings. The Liberals and Greens combined to reinstate expanded grounds for councils to hold closed-door sessions. NSW Local Government Minister Ron Hoenig described the outcome as a significant step backwards for community transparency and accountability. Read more details here

Four Frogs Crêperie Closing
After eight years of crêpes, galettes and a little slice of Brittany on Longueville Road, Four Frogs Crêperie will close its doors at the end of June.
For many locals, Four Frogs has been more than somewhere to eat. It has been the after-school treat spot, the family dinner backup plan, the catch-up with friends location and the place you went when only a crêpe would do.
The team says it is au revoir, not goodbye, “the crêpes aren’t going anywhere, only the address is changing” (but sadly not to elsewhere in Lane Cove).
Read the article for all the details, including the thank you offer for Lane Cove customers before they close.

North Sydney Olympic Pool Reopening in August
North Sydney Olympic Pool is finally reopening on Friday 7 August 2026.
The iconic facility was closed in February 2021 and has undergone extensive refurbishments which have cost over $120 million, a far cry from the initial $28 million budget.
The facility will have a 50m heated outdoor pool, 25m indoor pool, a gym, Pilates and group fitness studios, a swim school, kids’ pool and splash pad, spa, sauna, steam room, sundeck and a café and gelato bar. Details here.
The reopening is welcome news for local swimmers as the Lane Cove Aquatic Centre has been heavily relied upon during the North Sydney Pool’s five-year closure and Willoughby Leisure Centre’s pool closure in November 2022. The issue has been particularly exacerbated during school swimming carnival season. Willoughby is aiming to reopen in August/September 2026.
