At 6.31 am today (30 September 2022), Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) crews responded to major flooding inside an apartment located on the third floor of an apartment complex on Mowbray Road West, Lane Cove North.
A spokesperson for FRNSW told ITC that a hot water supply line burst. The water line ran along the concrete slab of the apartment building.
The rupture caused the suspended ceiling in one apartment to collapse, and water also impacted the two floors below it.
Water and electricity supplies were shut off, with residents evacuating until those utilities’ safety was fully assessed.
FRNSW firefighters also helped remove sodden materials, including carpet and furniture, and to contain water flow through the apartments.

One resident told ITC that when water was finally restored to the apartment complex by Sydney Water, he could hear a water hammer noise when he turned on the taps.
According to numerous plumbing websites, water hammer is a serious problem that can cause pipes to burst.
Strata management is continuing the clean-up.
The apartment complex was built in 2017 and has around 70 units.
