Hans Hallen was a well-known local Greenwich Artist. He moved to Greenwich from South Africa in 1987. He could regularly be seen painting at Mann’s Point Greenwich. In February 2022, Hans passed away – he was 91. He continued to paint right up to the last months of his life. A memorial bench has now been installed at Mann’s Point (see our cover photo).
Background
Hans was born in South Africa to Norwegian parents. After studying at the University of Natal and then the Architectural Association in London, Hans had a thriving architectural practice in South Africa. He was a council member of the International Union of Architects.
He migrated to Australia in 1987 and, after retiring from architectural practice, took up his great love of painting as a new career.
A few years ago, we asked Hans about his painting.
When did you first start painting?
As a child, but more seriously, when I retired.
Why did you decide to move to Australia?
We like Australia, and Australians.
Why do you like living in Lane Cove/Greenwich?
Easy access to amenities we look for in Sydney…church, theatre, Opera, and the harbour.
What is your favourite thing to do in Lane Cove/Greenwich?
Painting at Mann’s Point
What are your favourite things/subject to paint?
The landscape around me, especially Sydney Harbour.
