Kokoda after 75 years
In July 1942 Japanese Imperial Forces landed on the north coast of Papua New Guinea hoping to take Port Moresby via the Kokoda Track. The Kokoda Campaign was a baptism of fire for Australian World War II militia units and the Papuan Infantry Battalion. It would also be the closest Japanese land forces got to the Australian mainland during the war.
Lieutenant Colonel Rowan Tracey LLB BA will discuss the Kokoda Campaign in relation to the Japanese overall strategy in the Pacific and the Commonwealth Government’s response.
