Jerome Laxale’s Zoom Update on the Lane Cove ‘Cabling Cowboys’

I want to provide an important update regarding the telecommunications cabling concerns in Lane Cove and the surrounding suburbs. Following my previous letter and advocacy on this issue, the Telecommunications Industry Ombudsman (TIO) has responded to the concerns raised with Minister Michelle Rowland MP.

The TIO has confirmed that:

•  Xenith IG Australia Pty Ltd (formerly Fibre Path Pty Ltd) is a member of the TIO Scheme. This means residents can lodge complaints with the TIO regarding property damage or unsafe installations.
• The TIO has not received any formal land access objections before work commenced. Under the Telecommunications Code of Practice, landowners and occupiers can object before work begins, but the TIO cannot intervene retrospectively.
• Complaints regarding property damage can still be lodged. If you have experienced damage or disputes over repair costs due to this work, you may submit a complaint to the TIO within two years of discovering the problem.
• A broader investigation is underway. The TIO is working with the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) to assess any systemic issues with the telecommunications work in Lane Cove.

To assist affected residents, I will be hosting a Zoom session with the TIO to answer questions and provide support on the complaints process. This is an opportunity for you to understand your rights and get assistance in lodging complaints if necessary.
