Congrats You’re Now in Charge of Fundraising – What Next???

fundraising

You know that old chestnut – It was early in the school term, and the call was put out by the P&F committee for new and enthusiastic parents to step up and show their loyalty to the school community and volunteer some (inner) event management skills by being part of the team. You know there are some who firmly believe that the murderous trivia night portrayed in Lianne Moriarty’s best seller Big Little Lies was based on a Lane Cove fundraiser (we can tell you that is only a rumour and there is no evidence to link Lane Cove to the book).

Lyndall from Walkers Party Hire North Shore gives us a few tips on party planning.

You’ve planned a few parties in the past so surely organising a few fundraisers, some cake stalls and a community Fete Day couldn’t be that hard?! After half a glass of champers and encouragement from some supportive parents, you find yourself putting your hand up. “Congratulations and welcome to the team,” the principal says as they shake your hand firmly, “we need some fresh ideas and we look forward to hearing your plans”. Gulp! Welcome to School Fundraising and Events!

First order of the day is reviewing last year’s events & fundraisers: What did the P&F organise? How many parents/tickets were sold? Did they run out of cakes? Were there enough volunteers? Was it the right time of year for an outdoor event? Do they have all the info from last year?  Who can I talk to?

There’s going to be a lot of these questions which are only natural to ascertain and assess so that your year on the P&F is a viable and successful one. From book drives, themed cocktail evenings to trivia nights (a personal favourite!), there are lots of fundraising opportunities to get parents engaged and provide a memorable function. Meeting new people, teachers and developing school spirit are built on events such as these.

But keeping your eyes on the prize – whilst indulging in the caterer’s delicious canapés – your role is to crunch numbers and the bottom line is to make as much money for the school as possible. For new computer equipment, painting the playground asphalt, purchasing sports gear or shade sail across the quadrangle. The principal will thank you for your efforts and the reward will be in a successful event though using reliable local suppliers.
