Lane Cove Loves Lunar New Year

While a camel in the Plaza was a strange sight in 2017, did you know that every year a lion visits the Plaza? The annual Lunar New Year celebration is on Friday 8th February and we can’t wait to see the Pak Hok Kung Fu troupe back with their dramatic lion dance performance on the Plaza green. Hopefully a few local businesses will take up the opportunity to have the lion dance their way to their door to help bring good luck.

The Lane Cove Lunar New Year celebration is a free, fun-filled afternoon that includes entertainment, workshops and more.

While most countries that observe Lunar New Year have three to seven days of public holidays, celebrations don’t end until the 15th day of the first lunar month, also known as the Lantern Festival. (Lunar New Year in 2019 lasts from February 5 to February 19.)  Sadly no public holidays for Lunar New Year in Australia.

The Crowd at 2017 Year’s Lunar New year – follow the red lanterns

Whether you’re there from the start at 3:30pm or plan to drop by in time for the lion dance  (approx 5:45pm) there’ll be plenty of action before or after your Friday plans in Lane Cove Plaza.

Gallery Lane Cove + Creative Space Lantern Workshop

The Lunar New Year Celebrations continue with a Lantern Making Workshop.  Join Gallery Lane Cove + Creative Space in appreciating Tseng Ying Tung’s beautiful Papier Mache artworks in his first Australian exhibition Sprout: The Conservation of Energy while celebrating Year of the Pig in their free Lunar New Year Lantern Workshop! On the 9th of February from 11.00am to 1:00pm, children and adults alike are invited to spend a few hours with Gallery Lane Cove to make a lantern which will be displayed for the public on their terrace until the 14th of February!

Their goal is to fill the terrace with everyone’s creations so please come by with the kids and help us with this project! They will have smaller activities to participate in to make paper lanterns (which they can also hang up) and red pockets! Participants will receive some delicious chocolate coins to put in their red pockets when you’re finished. You will be able to collect your lanterns after the 15th of February.

Materials will be provided on the day. Wear something you can get messy. Gallery Lane Cove  will also allow drop ins on the day.  More info here.
