Lane Cove Week in Review 12th to 18th March 2018

This week the community came out in force to show their opposition to several new developments.

ATM

The above ATM was spotted on the footpath at Riverview.  You don’t see that very often.

Fiesty Community Consultation for Proposed Aged Care Facility at Northwood

The NSW Planning Dept has determined that the site at 4-18 Northwood Rd and 274-274A Longueville Rd (Speedway site) should be rezoned to permit up to a six storey development with 130 aged care beds and up to 1,500m 2 of retail space. If the rezoning proceeds the development will create a Traffic Nightmare at the dangerous intersections of Kenneth St and Northwood Rd/River Rd as vehicles will be allowed to enter the site only from the north and exit only to the south.

Hundreds of cars and trucks each day will therefore need to go around the block via Northwood Rd, Arabella St, up Woodford St and Christina St and turn right onto Kenneth St. This will create a RAT RUN, plaguing residential streets. Parking will become impossible, accidents inevitable.

The development is very similar to that proposed but defeated by community action and Lane Cove Council in 2013, except that the current proposal is for “aged-care” and that is supposed to make everything OK. The council last year unanimously rejected this latest developer bid to have the site rezoned. Council said the building would be far too big, inappropriate and cause all sorts of traffic and other problems for the local community.

However, the State Government overruled the council, ordering the proposal be publicly exhibited so the Minister for Planning could make the final decision. That Minister is Lane Cove’s local member, Mr Anthony Roberts MP.

Another community meeting will be held at the Lane Cove Country Club on 22 March at 7 pm.  You can find out more about the proposal here.

Community Meeting – St Leonards South Master Plan

Deputy Opposition Leader Michael Daley told more than 100 concerned residents that if he was their elected member he would not let the Sts Leonards Masters Plan proceed. Mr Daley said the council should stick to its local environment plan rather than submit to Planning Department gateway powers for the project, which proposes 2400 high-rise units in a three-block area adjoining Newlands Park. You can read the article here.

Bells Ringing in the Night

On Tuesday morning at 2.30 am Riverview residents were woken up by bells ringing.  St Ignatius Riverview advised that after extensive rain there was water damage to the Carillon bells.

Clearways On Centennial Avenue

The clearways signs have started to appear on Centennial Avenue – so much for community consultation.  Locals were featured in this week’s North Shore Times objecting to the proposal – you can read the article here.

Police Investigating Attempted Abduction

Chatswood Police are investigating the attempted abduction of a teenager on Centennial Avenue Chatswood – you can read more about this here.
