How often do you see your child struggle to get started on homework? How does a parent keep them motivated without nagging and making both the child and parent feel frustrated? Last year Sydney Therapy & Co introduced the Homework Collective. It was a hit with the families who used the service. Those families are returning this year. So, what is the Homework Collective? We ask Vanessa Lever, owner of Sydney Therapy & Co to tell ITC about the concept.
What is the Homework Collective?
The Homework Collective is a way to engage students in getting their homework done while learning “how to do it” through key organisation skills. The strategies they learn at the Homework Collective means your child can continue to carry on with tasks at home throughout the week and at school with confidence and less stress.
Why did you launch the Homework Collective?
The idea was to take parents out of the position of nagging kids to get homework done and provide a space where kids could learn homework skills that will help boost confidence in homework, assignments and study.
What are the benefits for students?
Students don’t just come to get their homework out of the way, they learn skills to be able to get it done whether they are at the Homework Collective or at home. It builds confidence in kids. They start to see homework as something achievable not a chore.
What are the benefits for parents?
The Homework Collective gives parents peace of mind, so homework doesn’t continue to be a home battle. Students learn the concept of managing timelines and time management as they work towards independent skills. Parents are left to do the role of parent rather than homework master.
Which age group does the Homework Collective help?
All ages ! We have rolled out our Homework Collective for three levels. Lower primary school k – 2, upper primary 3 – 5 and then high school 6 – 12. The benefit of small groups within these ages means we can focus on age appropriate tasks.
What has been the feedback?
The proof is in the pudding. One hundred percent of our 2018 clients are returning for another year at the Homework Collective. The students don’t view it as a chore to visit the Homework Collective. They know they will get their work done, have support without distractions. This means more time at home to do the things they like.
This is some of the feedback from parents:
Our daughter has found her sessions at the Homework Collective very useful and ensured she did work in an undistracted manner, so she is interested in doing the sessions again. (Mum of Year 10 student)
Just confirming that we’ll sign our daughter up for the term. She loved her trial! (Mum of Year 3 student)
