NSW Health Minister’s Update on Lane Cove West PS Student’s Positive COVID-19 Test

A seven-year-old (Year 2) student at Lane Cove West Public School was one of the four new COVID-19 cases recorded in NSW since 8 pm yesterday (24 June 2020).  The source of infection is not yet known and is under investigation.  The remaining three cases were in returned overseas travellers in hotel quarantine.

The NSW Health Minister, Brad Hazzard, said: “Fortuitously, the symptoms came on a Saturday, so hopefully there was no transmission at the school.”

The Minister also noted that an additional testing facility had been established at North Shore Public Hospital for members of the Lane Cove West Public-School community.  Only students who are unwell with a fever or respiratory symptoms such as a sore throat or cough need to be tested. The clinic is located on level 4 of the Douglas Building at RNSH (access from Sturt Place off Reserve Rd)

The Minister applauded the Lane Cove West Public-School community for coming forward to be tested so quickly.  He commented that there was a line waiting to be tested at 7 am this morning and as at 10 am today 63 people had been tested.  The Minister did at one stage during the press release incorrectly refer to the School as Lane Cove Public School and not Lane Cove West Public School.

The health minister asked New South Wales residents not to become complacent or cocky.

“Just one person, just one person, could see this virus (spread) to many other people,” Hazzard said.

“We expect in the next 24 hours we will be talking about at least one, possibly more cases of community transmission.”

He also urged NSW residents not to visit Melbourne during the school holidays.

Praise for Lane Cove West Public

Lane Cove West Public School has been praised on ITC Lane Cove Chat with one member saying:

“Massive shout out to the Teachers and staff of LCWPS for their handling of the COVID-19 case yesterday. Clear and concise comms and kids had online lesson plans ready to go this morning. Very impressed with Tania and her team.”

The School is being deep cleaned today, and this morning a large team of cleaners were seen at the School.

The School has cancelled a year four excursion to the Field of Mars on Friday and an Incursion Aboriginal Dance Performance on 2 July 2020.
