Welcome to our Week in Review our cover photo was taken last Friday night at the Longueville Sports Club (aka The Diddy) and shows there were some blue skies around Lane Cove last week.

COVID19 Cases on the North Shore

COVID19 cases continue to increase due to the new Omicron variant. Set out below are the daily figures up to 4 pm on 15 March 2021.  *NSW Health advises that about 10,000 positive rapid antigen tests (RATs) registered with Service NSW by people between Sunday 13 March and Monday 14 March are included in today’s numbers following a data processing issue.

The Sydney Morning Herald published an article on 13 March 2022 noting that the number of COVID19 cases has increased in schools. The article noted:

“St Ignatius wrote to parents saying the number of cases had increased five-fold last week, to more than 500 cases, compared with the week before.”

A spokesperson for St Ignatius College Riverview told ITC that this figure was not correct, and parents could keep up to date on the number of cases at the school as the stats are updated each day on the school’s intranet.

However, it is correct to say that reported case rates continue to be highest in people aged 10-19 years across NSW.

NSW Health encourages everyone eligible to receive a vaccination or booster dose to book into an NSW Health vaccination clinic or another provider without delay through the COVID-19 vaccine clinic finder.

    Lane Cove Traffic Committee

For the first time, the Lane Cove Traffic Committee Agenda was circulated in advance and locals were allowed to register to speak on an agenda item at the meeting held on 15 March 2022.  The matters discussed by the Traffic Committee are detailed here.   One of the matters discussed were speed cushions on the approach to The Canopy roundabout.  See the photo below.

    Polluted Water

When (and if) the weather fines up, you may be tempted to go for a swim at the beach or in one of our harbour beaches like Greenwich. Check out the Beach water report before swimming and remember as a general precaution, swimming in Sydney Harbour should be avoided for up to three days following rainfall or for as long as stormwater is present.

The Beach water report notes that pollution is possible at Greenwich Baths. Check here before going swimming.

You can also check out the annual Harbourside Beach Water Quality Report here.

Recycling Update from Lane Cove Council and Update on the Transfer station at Artarmon

Lane Cove Council Recycling Services: Wednesday – Friday collections this week

“Lane Cove residents who place their recycling bins out for collection between Wednesday and Friday are requested to leave their bins at the kerbside until they are emptied as it is likely there will be some short delays in their collection between now and the weekend. Red-lidded bins will be collected in the mornings as close to the usual time as possible.

While we have so far been able to keep up with service collections despite storm damage to the train line infrastructure which transports our waste, it is anticipated that our contractor will take longer to return to collect blue, yellow and green-lidded bins in the coming days. To assist, we ask that residents please present their bins on the normal days and keep them on the kerbside until they have been emptied. For those with collections later in the week, these may be collected on Saturday 19 March if the additional time is needed to catch up on any missed servicing.

At this stage, the impact is isolated to this week only; Council’s website will include the latest information.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation, and apologies for any inconvenience caused.

If you have further enquiries on the matter, you can contact Council on 9911 3555.”

    Cleanaway Artarmon

If you are cleaning up this weekend, please note the following:

Cleanaway (formerly Suez) Waste Transfer Station (aka the tip) have closed their Artarmon and Ryde sites.

A spokesperson for Cleanaway told ITC the following:

“Artarmon and Ryde are closed to the public due to the high volume of waste coming in due to the clean-up and the wet ground. The sites need to restrict volumes and movement to ensure the site’s safety and environmental management. They will remain closed until the rain stops and vehicles can easily move through the site. Our webpages for those sites will be kept up to date as the situation changes.”

    Lane Cove Physio

Lane Cove Physio has a new team member!!

A not-so-new face has joined the team at Lane Cove Physiotherapy- reintroducing Kirsty Tradell.

Originally from the sunshine state, Kirsty is no stranger to Lane Cove. Since following her husband’s work in Sydney 7 years ago, Kirsty has been helping Lower North Shore locals and families return from injury and regain confidence in their bodies’ abilities.

From a household entrenched in all things sport, Kirsty has always understood her patients yearn to return to the things they love in life, no matter if this is sport; chasing after grandchildren (which can be like a sport), or being fit to take on their next travel adventure.

When Kirsty isn’t Physio-ing, you’ll find her either at the gym or hunting down the latest cafe/restaurant to taste test; as her patients know, she enjoys practising “balance” in life. She’s ready and raring to help sort out those niggles you’ve been holding onto, so come down to Lane Cove Physiotherapy and welcome her back to the Cove.

You can book to see her at www.lanecovephysio.com.au or call 9428 5772.

The gang was active in Lane Cove (see below a snapshot taken from CCTV footage of the gang in action in Lane Cove – they had just tried all the doors to the house and were about to check out if motor vehicles were unlocked). The CCTV footage was taken on 6 March 2022. One car and one home was broken into. Residents awoke and ran the two men out of their house.

    Stranger Danger Warning
The following incident was advised to Lane Cove West Primary School Parent today (Wednesday 16 March 2022).
An 11-year-old boy was approached today at a bus stop this morning in the Lane Cove area. A car pulled up, and the driver remained in the car and the passenger got out of the car. He came up to the child and said the school buses were not running and the school was sending Ubers to pick up the kids and take them to school. To his credit, the child refused to get in the car. The man persisted with the story and luckily an adult who was nearby overheard and stepped in. The family involved has reported the incident to the police but wanted to share the story as a reminder to keep the conversation around safety open and ongoing.

UPDATE FROM POLICE MEDIA UNIT (the info provided by Lane Cove West Public School had the wrong date)

A police spokesperson advised ITC the following:

“About 8am last Wednesday (9 March 2022), an 11-year-old boy was waiting for a bus on Lane Cove Road, Lane Cove, when an unknown male approached and offered to drive him to school.
He allegedly told the boy that buses were not operating. The boy declined the offer.
Police were notified and officers attached to North Shore Police Area Command commenced an investigation.
The man police would like to speak with is of Indian Sub-Continental appearance, believed to be aged in his 20s, about 160cm tall, slim build with broad shoulders, and acne on his face. He was last seen wearing a black jumper, black tracksuit pants, black shoes and was carrying a backpack.
    Inquiries continue.”
Note that the police media unit have mentioned Lane Cove Road – Lane Cove ( Lane Cove Road does not go through Lane Cove so we are seeking further info on where exactly this was – Ryde or Macquarie Park)
    Drug Bust in Hunters Hill

In June (2021) detectives from the State Crime Command’s Organised Crime Squad, together with the NSW Crime Commission (NSWCC), established Strike Force Nandewar to investigate the activities of a criminal syndicate suspected to be involved in the importation of prohibited drugs.

Their inquiries uncovered the successful importation of 225kg of methamphetamine and 175kg of heroin from Malaysia in an airfreight consignment on 23 March 2021, which was concealed within tea bags.

The total estimated street value of the drugs is more than $250 million.

Following extensive inquiries, a 47-year-old Hunters Hill man was arrested at Sydney International Airport just after 1 pm yesterday (Thursday 10 March 2022) while attempting to board a flight to Bangkok.

He was taken to Surry Hills Police Station.

About 5 pm, officers from Raptor Highway Patrol stopped an Audi RSQ8 at Putney and arrested another 47-year-old man.

The Putney man was taken to Ryde Police Station, and the Audi was seized.

A short time later, strike force investigators – assisted by North West Metropolitan Region Enforcement Squad (RES) – executed two search warrants at Putney and Hunters Hill homes.

Investigators located and seized cash, electronic devices, and other items relevant to investigations during the searches.

All seized items will undergo forensic analysis.

The Hunters Hill man has since been charged with six offences, including three counts of deal in indictable crime proceeds money and property more than $1 million, two counts of import commercial quantity of border-controlled drug, and direct activities of criminal organisation.

The Putney man was charged with three offences, including two counts of import commercial quantity of border-controlled drug and direct activities of criminal organisation.

Both men were refused bail and appeared at local courts today (Friday 11 March 2022), where they were formally refused bail to reappear at Central Local Court on Wednesday 11 May 2022.

Organised Crime Squad Commander, Detective Superintendent Robert Critchlow, said invaluable data gathered during Operation Ironside continues to bear fruit for investigators.

“This particular import was facilitated using ANOM phones that crooks believed were encrypted and utilised for anything from drug imports to hits on rivals, or worse,” Det Supt Critchlow said.

“In this instance, police will allege a fictitious hospitality company was created so the drugs could be sent under the guise of tea and escape the reaches of law enforcement.

“This should be a warning to anyone who used the ANOM phones to conduct illicit activities; we know what you did, and we’re working backwards to find you, then prosecute you,” Det Supt Critchlow said.
