It’s been a mixed bag with the weather this week. Last Friday night, the thunder and lightning were intense (and unfortunately meant some locals lost their NBN connection). On Tuesday, it was a lovely Autumn day. Unfortunately, the weather will take a turn for the worst for the rest of the week.
NSW SES posted the following:
“RENEWED SEVERE WEATHER IS POSSIBLE THIS WEEK
Isolated showers and thunderstorms will feature across much of the state this week, with rainfall increasing in the north/northeast NSW into the weekend.
The main threat associated with severe #thunderstorms is damaging winds leading to the uprooting of trees and short bursts of heavy rain that could lead to flash-flooding.
NSW SES continue to receive resupply and clean up requests and are mindful this new system could hamper recovery efforts.
If you are in a low-lying area or close to rivers or streams already affected by flooding:
Stay up to date over the next few days by monitoring the Bureau of meteorology website at www.bom.gov.au
- Monitor conditions in your local area.
- Make the safe decision and turn around if you come across flooded roads or causeways.
- Put together an #emergency kit for your home or business
- For the latest up-to-date traffic information, please visit Live Traffic NSW
For emergency assistance in floods and storms or to request #sandbags, call NSW SES on 132 500. If the situation is life-threatening, call Triple Zero (000) immediately.”
Pathways Northwood Construction Site
You may have seen our recent article on the Pathways Development site, where we reported that the Lane Cove Council had issued at least six penalty infringement notices. Find out more here.
There are some other issues that the Pathways demolition team may need to deal with.
Three councillors (Councillor Bridget Kennedy, Mayor Andrew Zbik – Lane Cove and Councillor Kathy Bryla – Lane Cove) were being shown the bushland area immediately behind the site. They observed silt runoff, rubbish and other debris behind the site. They immediately asked the head of the Lane Cove Council development team to meet with the demolition team and the private certifier and, if possible, issue a stop-work notice. We will let you know when we have further information on the outcome of the meeting.
ADF Helicopter Training
You may have heard the helicopters on Monday night – The ADF is undertaking training exercises until 1 April 2022. This is not the first time we have had ADF choppers over Lane Cove. There were relatively few flybys on Monday night compared to previous occasions.
As usual, our roving reporters were on the spot.
We have documented their previous flybys – see the videos and photos here.
The ADF released the following statement:
The Australian Defence Force (ADF) will conduct counter-terrorism training in the Sydney, Wollongong, Jervis Bay, Eurobodalla and Port Macquarie regions of New South Wales from 21 February to 1 April 2022.
The training will be conducted during the day and at night and involves responses to simulated terrorist scenarios.
The public should not be alarmed if they see or hear military helicopters, vehicles and military personnel carrying weapons. No ammunition will be used during the training.
People who see the training should not be concerned that any of the locations are under any form of actual threat.
Local New South Wales police and councils are aware of the training.
Commander of the 16th Aviation Brigade, Brigadier David Hafner, said ADF personnel were looking forward to the opportunity to use the selected areas for this essential training.
“Aviation training to support counter-terrorism activities is designed to be complex, and is required to be undertaken in locations unfamiliar to the aircrew. We’re very much looking forward to using these areas to help our helicopter crews and personnel continue to sustain our world-class counter terrorism response capability.
“We acknowledge these activities may result in some noise disturbance for residents in the vicinity, but I want to reassure everybody this is essential to provide our personnel with realistic training.”
This training must continue despite the COVID-19 pandemic as it is essential to ensure the ADF is operating at the highest level of capability to respond where required to support Australia’s national interests.
“Defence continues to adhere to Government guidelines on reducing the spread of COVID 19. Defence will not take any risks with the health of local residents and for everybody’s safety we ask that if you do see or hear the training, please maintain your distance.”
Defence is unable to provide further information regarding this training in order to protect operational tactics, techniques and procedures.
Reporting Issues to Lane Cove Council
As you know, the recent rains were pretty tough on our roads.
Well done to the Lane Cove Council maintenance team, who fixed up 50 potholes reported during the two weeks of rain, and as of last Thursday, the majority were ‘made good’. LCC has said further work might need to be done later on, but they are not gaping big holes.
For the last couple of years, ITC has been asking LCC to make reporting issues easier, and we are pleased to say that there is a new online form to help report potholes, damaged roads, kerb and gutter problems, and unsafe roads/hazards are now live here.
Road Issues (like potholes, gutter etc.)
https://service.lanecove.nsw.gov.au/…/Roads…/step/1
Footpaths
https://service.lanecove.nsw.gov.au/…/Footpaths…/step/1 – footpaths
Other Issues
There is also now a general form where you can report issues – previously, the form was tough to use as you needed to put your address in, and that was a problem if you were reporting something that was not at your address.
https://service.lanecove.nsw.gov.au/…/general…/step/1
ITC appreciates LCC taking on board these issues, and we also know the new councillors coming in were pushing for easy reporting.
Lane Cove is it up to you – if you see something that needs fixing, report it asap. If you see something dangerous, report it asap.
Now, if only the LCC website were mobile optimised to make it easier.
Update on Garbage Collection
In last week’s review, you may have seen that Lane Cove Council advised there could be delays in picking up your recycling bins. The good news is that the bins appear to have been collected as usual.
The EPA released the following statement on 18 March 2022
“Unprecedented flooding and heavy rains have significantly affected essential transport and landfill infrastructure in NSW, which has impacted some household and business waste collection services.
As a result, the EPA has been informed by the waste industry that some council red-lid bin collection services in Sydney’s north, south, inner west and eastern suburbs may be interrupted and not collected at their usual times.
Residents should keep an eye on their council websites for updates to services, and businesses should contact their service provider.
The NSW EPA is assisting councils and the waste sector, which are working together to address the issue as quickly as possible. The NSW EPA has approved a number of temporary measures to help industry continue operating flexibly in this difficult situation, including
- permitting the Woodlawn landfill to operate on Sunday
- extending the minimum amount of waste that can be stored at certain transfer stations, before being taken for final disposal
- extended the operating hours at the Lucas Heights Landfill
The NSW EPA has also been liaising with the Transport Management Centre about the southern rail line, which is crucial for waste transport, and was reopened on Wednesday, 16 March.
We appreciate there may also be some associated impacts with delayed waste collections, such as odour. We thank the community for their understanding and patience in this extraordinary time brought about by the impact of these floods.”
The Cleanaway Transfer Stations at Artarmon and Ryde are now open but are not permitting hand unloading. This means their free cardboard recycling services are not available.

Crime and Accident Reports
Police Operation – Mama Hong
