Lane Cove News Week in Review 29th November to 6 December 2023

Welcome to our week in review.

This week was a rollercoaster with the weather.  Luckily the weather was fine for what is traditionally one of the biggest events on the Lane Cove Calendar – Bluey and Bingo entertaining kids in Lane Cove and the Lighting of the Christmas Tree.

Lane Cove Council’s Official Start to the Christmas Season Friday 1 December 2023

The Canopy was packed on Friday 1 December 2023 with families enjoying the Bluey and Bingo Christmas Concert.  The mosh pit was packed!!! It was followed by the annual lighting of the Christmas Tree in Lane Cove Plaza.  The parking was also very chaotic with some traffic delays. If you were parked on the bottom level of The Canopy it was taking about 10 minutes to make it to the exit and then the traffic was heavy on Burns Bay Road.

Hail on Saturday 2 December 2024

On Saturday Night there was a fierce thunderstorm with pea-sized hail.  In the Cove is not aware of any car or property damage (other than noted below).

Our roving reporters were all over it, and below are some photos and a video of the hail.

The nearest official BOM rain monitoring site is Chatswood Bowling Club, 14mm of rain fell in the period up to 9 am on Sunday 5th December 2023.

Below is the rainfall for November and Early December 2023.

Sediment Control Issues Continue

The lack of sediment control at building sites is still an issue. Our roving reporters are all over it. If you see any issues, please report to Lane Cove Council asap – you can report online here.

ONe roving reporter noted the lack of sediment control at the building site on 428 to 432 Mowbray Road Lane Cove North.  See the photos below.  The concerning issue for this site is that it is an ex-petrol service station site and remedial contamination work has just started.

Storm Damage to Businesses at 50 to 54 Burns Bay Road

Businesses such as Burns Bay Bookery and La Provence again sustained storm damage to their premises.  This seems to happen on a regular basis when there is substantial rain.  The Burns Bay Bookery posted the following on their Instagram Page (and yes luckily it was only the classics and poetry section that was impacted).

Heat Warning Saturday 9th December 2023

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecasted a very hot day on Saturday 9th December 2023 – 41 degrees.

NSW Health has published the following recommendations to avoid heatstroke.

“Heatwaves can be dangerous for everyone’s health, but some people are more vulnerable, including people over 65 years old, babies and young children, people with certain medical conditions, people who work outside, pregnant women, people who live alone or are socially isolated and people who are homeless.

There are a few simple things you can do to stay safe in a heatwave:

  • Avoid being outdoors in the hottest part of the day.
  • Keep your home cooler by using air-conditioning or electric fans and closing doors, windows, blinds, and curtains.
  • Limit your physical activity to early in the morning when it’s coolest.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking water regularly. If your doctor has restricted your fluid intake, ask them about how much you should drink when it is hot.
  • When outdoors, apply sunscreen and wear sunglasses and a wide-brim hat to protect your eyes, face, and scalp
  • Seek out cool places or air-conditioned public facilities in your local area, if you can safely travel without getting too hot

It is also important to recognise the signs of heat-related illness.

Heat exhaustion is a serious heat-related illness and is your body’s response to a loss of water and salt in hot weather, usually through excessive sweating or excessive physical activity. Symptoms include pale skin, headache, nausea or vomiting, dizziness, fainting, weakness, irritability, thirst, heavy sweating, muscle cramps, and decreased urine output. Seek medical care if you experience these symptoms and they do not improve. Call your doctor or healthdirect on 1800 022 222. If symptoms are worsening and you are concerned about heat stroke, immediately call triple zero (000).

Heat stroke is the most severe heat-related illness. In extreme heat, your body’s ability to cool itself down can fail, causing your body temperature to increase to a dangerous level. If left untreated, this can result in permanent disability or death. Heat stroke requires immediate medical emergency care. Symptoms include confusion, slurred speech, agitation and altered mental state, profuse sweating or hot, dry skin, muscle twitching or seizures, rapid breathing, a quick, strong pulse or very high body temperature. Heat stroke is extremely dangerous and can quickly threaten life. If you are concerned about heat stroke, immediately call triple zero (000).

Visit https://www.health.nsw.gov.au/beattheheat for information on how to stay safe during a heatwave.”

In October 2023, Crown Lands supported the Heritage Listing of the area known as Badangi, a unique, natural landscape on the northern bank of Sydney Harbour.
